Scholarship of Teaching and Learning/Center for Scholarly Teaching, 5 Years at UWO

A reception for past SoTL participants and scholars, supporters, and those interested in the SoTL/CST program. Opening remarks followed by an informal discussion of this year’s theme, “What Are We Doing Here? Exploring Differences in Student-Faculty Perspectives on College.” Appetizers will be served.
Is College Life Like in the Movies?
Monday, October 30, 6 – 8pm, Reeve Union Theatre 307
A series of movie clips will be shown about college life, including scenes from movies like Back to School, Animal House, and Revenge of the Nerds. Do these movies influence expectations about what college will be like? What about how students are represented? A structured dialog led by faculty Helen Bannan and Richard Kalinoski. Popcorn and cider will be served. A special thank you to the UW Oshkosh Film Society for helping to organize this event.
Grades: Tricks or Treats?

A frank discussion will take place about the issue of grade inflation at UW Oshkosh from both faculty and student perspectives. What are the causes? Is it really a problem? The discussion will be moderated by Professor Bryan Lilly. Panel members include Bill Wresch, Undergraduate Program Director of COBA, John Koker, Interim Dean of COLS, and Peter Meyerson, Associate Professor, COEHS.
Workshop & Luncheon -- Doing SoTL Research

Please RSVP by Wednesday October 25 with the Grants Office (grants@uwosh.edu). Lee McCann and Barry Perlman will focus on how to conduct Scholarship of Teaching and Learning research. Topics to be discussed include how to design a project, how to apply for SoTL grant monies, how to navigate the IRB or human subject requirements, how to promote and explain SoTL as “real” research, and where to publish your work.
Opportunity Cost: Student-Faculty Perspectives on Student Campus Engagement

Discussion of UWO’s performance on the National Survey of Student Engagement and what we can do to promote a culture of campus engagment. Professor Kevin McGee will share data on students’ work, study, and social habits that he has collected over the past 15 years. Panelists include Dean Al Hartman, Prof. Bill Wacholtz and several students.

Is it appropriate or acceptable to talk about “controversial” topics in the classroom? Religion? Politics? In this workshop Jeffrey Kaplan of Religious Studies, Dave Siemers of Political Science, and Gregory Adler of Biology will discuss how and why to teach controversial subjects in the classroom.
Exploring Student Preconceptions about Gender & Majors
Thursday, November 2, 3 to 5pm, Reeve Union Theatre 307
Can women major in anything they want? What are the implications in terms of others’ expectations of what women should study? After viewing clips from the Gender Chip Project (http://www.genderchip.org/), we discuss what is it like to be a woman training in college for a career in professions like science, economics, math, or technology? Professors Nancy Burnett, Jennifer Mihalick, and Jen Szydlik will lead the discussion.
