Lesson Study Training Grants
The Office of Professional and Instructional Development invites applications from UW System faculty and teaching staff for small grants of up to $1,500 to engage in lesson study during 2006-2007.
Lesson Study is a teaching improvement process in which a small team of instructors (usually 3-6) designs, teaches, observes, evaluates and revises a single class lesson, called a research lesson. The grants are intended to train instructors to do lesson study and support teams to do a lesson study during the academic year. The training component includes a lesson study workshop offered on your campus, access to consultation throughout the year, mid-year feedback, and a review of your lesson study at the conclusion of your work. The Lesson Study Project Director, Bill Cerbin, UW-La Crosse, will oversee the program and provide training and consultation to campus teams.
Grant recipients will be expected to
- 1.Participate in a training session to learn how to do lesson study in the college classroom
- 2. Carry out a lesson study in which your team produces one research lesson during the year (i.e., design, teach, observe, record, evaluate and revise the lesson)
- 3. document your lesson study on the Lesson Study Project website located at www.uwlax.edu/sotl/lsp
Eligibility: Faculty and teaching staff in the UW System are eligible to apply. Applications must be submitted by a lesson study team, i.e., 3-6 individuals who intend to do a lesson study together during the academic year. More than one team from an institution may apply—but each team should submit a separate application.
Timeline: The training workshop should be held prior to the start of the lesson study. Teams may begin their lesson study anytime after the training workshop but no later than spring 2006. Teams will repeat the lesson study cycle in fall 2006 and then complete a final report.
Selection: Because funds are limited, we may not be able to fund all applications.
Reporting: The team must submit an electronic summary of its lesson study at the conclusion of its work.
