Making a Difference in the Teaching-Learning Process
Call for SoTL Scholar Project Proposals:
- The UW-Oshkosh SoTL Initiative/CST is pleased to announce that it will be supporting a fifth class of scholars this academic year.
- This class of scholars will be comprised of faculty and student research teams.
- These projects must investigate differences in faculty and student perspectives related to teaching and learning at UW-Oshkosh. These “differences” between the faculty and students have been identified in a faculty survey as one of our “Top Five” teaching and learning challenges.
- Project applications are due to the SoTL Office by November 15th. Applications may be found on the SoTL Web-site and can be submitted electronically to SoTL Initiative/CST co-coordinator, Marianne Johnson at johnsonm@uwosh.edu . Please feel free to contact Dr. Johnson with any questions about your proposal.
- An opportunity for discussion of project possibilities will be held during the Second Annual Provost’s Teaching and Learning Summit, Oct. 30th-Nov. 4th. Watch for further details.
- The timeline for these projects should include research completed by the end of the Spring 07 semester, with manuscript and presentation plans to be completed in Summer 07.
- The per-project stipends to faculty ($2,000) and student ($1,500) research partners are made possible through a grant from the UW-System Office of Professional Instructional Development (OPID).
- A campus showcase of the projects is planned to occur during the Fall 07 Third Annual Provost’s Teaching and Learning Summit. This showcase will be Web-cast throughout the UW-System so that UW-Oshkosh may model the inclusion of the student voice in the scholarship of teaching and learning.
Details of Financial Support of Faculty-Student Research Teams:
- For each project, a $1,500 stipend will be paid to the faculty researcher and a $1,000 stipend paid to the student researcher upon completion of the research activities. “Completion” will be determined by the SoTL Steering Committee. In addition, the faculty and student participant will receive an additional $500 following submission of their work to Teaching Forum and presentation of their work at the Fall 07 Provost’s Teaching and Learning Summit. The research would be expected to be completed in the Spring 07 semester with preparation of the manuscript and Summit presentation to be undertaken in Summer 07.
Special Notes:
- If more than one faculty member or more than one student participates in a project, the stipends will be split among the faculty members and/or among the students. The funding is “per project”.
- The SoTL Initiative/CST will also provide money to researchers for duplication costs of instruments used in data collection for their projects and will fund poster creation for the Summit presentations.
Purpose of the Project: To expand the knowledge-base related to the way in which faculty and student perceptual differences about teaching and learning impact teaching and learning through collaborative, systematic investigation; to use that knowledge-base to serve the UW System SoTL community with applied pedagogical information and to stimulate similar research by providing models of a type of investigation that is currently under-represented
