UW Oshkosh Sociology Department Advising Policy
1. Most declared sociology majors will be assigned a faculty advisor from the sociology department during their enrollment in Sociology 203. No later than two weeks before enrollment begins for the following semester, the students enrolled in that class will be required to attend a meeting with the sociology faculty at which information will be presented concerning the requirements of the major, faculty interests and expertise, and other pertinent information. The meeting will normally last about two hours, and there will be ample opportunity for students to ask questions and to talk to faculty members individually. Near the end of the meeting, students will be asked to indicate their preferences concerning an advisor. Within the following day or two, the department chair will use these preferences, along with the list of current advisor assignments, to assign the students who had attended the meeting to advisors.
2. Transfer students with a declared sociology major are required to take Sociology 203, but if they do not do so in their first semester here, they are strongly urged to attend the meeting mentioned in #1 in their first semester here.
3. Continuing UW Oshkosh students who have declared the major but not yet enrolled in Sociology 203 are also strongly urged to attend the meeting mentioned in #1 in the same semester that they declare the major.
4. Existing majors who declared their sociology major prior to September 2009, and are thus not required to take Sociology 203, are still welcome to attend the meeting described above.
5. Any of the majors mentioned in #2, #3, or #4 above who do not attend the meeting may submit their preferences for an advisor directly to the department chair, but students who do so via the meeting will be given priority in advisor assignment. Students who already have had an advisor assigned in a previous semester will be assumed to be continuing with that advisor unless they indicate otherwise (see #6 below). Students who do not have an advisor and who do not indicate their preferences by the time of the meeting mentioned above will simply be assigned an advisor by the department chair
6. In the assignment of advisors, the chair will endeavor either to create a roughly equal distribution of students among advisors (the default distribution), or to follow any disproportional distribution decided upon by the department. In either case, the number students already assigned to an advisor will be taken into account.
7. All sociology majors, including double majors, are required to consult with their advisors each semester before registering for the next semester. The department will place a “hold” on each student’s record, preventing them from registering for any classes before the removal of that hold. Immediately after their meeting with their advisor each semester, the advisor will advise the department’s academic department associate to remove the hold. Because our majors need to be able to register as soon as registration opens for each semester, most of the meetings with advisors will take place in the week prior to the opening of registration. However, those who have continuing advisors (i.e., those who were assigned an advisor in a previous semester) may meet with those advisors and have the hold removed earlier in the current semester.
8. Students may request a change of advisor at any time by contacting the department chair. While every effort will be made to assign students to their preferred advisors and make changes requested, the department chair will not make reassignments in a way that leads to a significant deviation from the department’s preferred division of advisor duties (see #4 above).
9. Students will be informed that they can meet with their advisors at any time, and not only for purposes of course registration.
10. While the vast majority of sociology majors are juniors or seniors, students who have not completed General Education or other graduation requirements beyond those of the major, and students who have earned less than 60 credits overall, will be advised to continue to consult with Ann Kunkle Jones or other UARC advisors concerning those requirements.
11. The department uses an e-mail list of its majors for communication regarding a variety of matters. The list will be used to remind students of the advising requirements, and it will be of particular importance since published material on the major will necessarily lag some of the changes being made.
12. The department will also use the e-mail list to remind students of the considerable amount of discipline and career information available through links on the department’s webpage.
13. The department is one of a select group of departments that participated in a study of what sociology majors do after the baccalaureate. This study was conducted under the auspices of the American Sociological Association. The department will continue to make use of the information gained from this study in its advising, and to provide such information to other concerned parties at the university (staff members of the UARC in particular).
