Robert Schope

Robert D. Schope, BA (Political Science, Coe College), MA (American History, University of Iowa), MSW and PhD (University of Illinois at Chicago).
Dr. Schope joined the faculty as an Associate Professor in August of 2006. He previously was an Assistant Professor at the School of Social Work at the University of Iowa for ten years, where he served as Undergraduate Coordinator for three years. He has also taught at both Jane Addams College of Social Work (UIC) and at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. For over 30 years, he has been involved in policy practice in the struggle for civil rights for LGBT individuals and was for many years an active member of Dignity/Chicago.
Dr. Schope has articles published in the Journal of Gerontological Social Work (for which he recently received the Rose Dobrof Award for scholarship), Smith College Studies of Social Work, and in the Journal of Gay and Lesbian Social Services (he is currently on the journal’s Editorial Board). He also is co-author of a chapter on LGBT identity formation in a LGBT health handbook soon to be released. He has presented his research at major state, national, and international conferences, with his latest line of research being on LGBT aging.
Dr. Schope teaches courses on social work ethics, cultural competence in a diverse society, social welfare history, and policy at both the undergraduate and graduate level. He also wishes to convey that he is very happy to be working with the talented faculty and students at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh.
