An estimated 500 people, including state legislators, University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh administrators and staff, local law enforcement, area fire rescue personnel and community members, gathered at the Grand Opera House in Oshkosh Jan. 22 for “A Salute to Hometown Heroes,” which included the premiere of the short documentary “Airboat Rescue 1: When the Ice Breaks.” The film was the result of a cross-discipline project led by UW-Oshkosh Journalism Professor Grace Lim and Radio-TV-Film students Mark Mazur and Trent Hilborn. UW Oshkosh students also contributed to the film’s narration and score. The Hometown Heroes salute cast a spotlight on the everyday, life-saving selflessness and heroics of community fire and rescue personnel.
