2007 Science Safari & Science Expedition Session Descriptions

Dissecting Quail Embryos You will observe and dissect quail embryos of different, early stages of development. You will practice the same techniques that are used in the college lab in the research program to place embryonic cells in culture.
Making Lotion We will use chemistry to make our own hand lotion! And we don't just add color and scent, we start from scratch! Each participant takes home a sample.
Create a Web Page! You can learn the basics of programming for the Internet by building your own personal web page. Your creation will be "live" on the Internet by the end of the day!
Train that Brain Build your own model neuron and participate in activities that will show you how messaging occurs from your noggin to your fingers!
Why is my computer fast and other times slow? Playing telephone is fun, it is easy to play and understand. So is computing! Students will have a great time as computing messaging concepts are presented thru an activity. The activity demonstrates the communication that goes on within a computer to complete a task. Each participant will get first-hand experience on how computers work via messaging. At the end of the session students will have a better understanding as to why computers sometimes may run fast and other times slow.

Bubble Gum Mania Do you know how much sugar is in a piece of Bubble Yum? Or which bubble gum has the most sugar? How about sugar-free gum? You'll learn how to use the scientific method to figure out just how much sugar you're putting in your mouth.
Pancake Chemistry Are you curious to learn about the important role ingredients make in baking? Are you curious to learn about the chemical reactions that occur right on your own stove as you make pancakes? You'll have a chance to learn about the role different ingredients play in baking and participate in some baking experiments.
You're Going to Drink That Stuff? Participants will learn about the two major sources of drinking water; surface and ground water. They will test for certain water quality parameters in the Fox River and in well water (behind Harrington Hall) and will learn how water moves by groundwater flow.
Comets and Constellations Make an edible comet and learn about the constellations that you can find in the night sky.
What's Your Health IQ? How do you measure up? Listen to heart beat; measure blood pressure, measure pulse at rest and after exercise, height, weight, test different reflexes and check your balance.
Magnify my World! Ever see a tarantula up close and personal? How about your own cells? We'll look at small and large specimen and learn how to use microscopes in a fun way!
