Attention: Important Changes to State and Federal Benefits

As you may know, a new federal GI Bill is being implemented in Fall 2009. The name of this new bill is the Post 9/11 Federal GI Bill (Chapter 33). This new bill is in addition to the other federal educational benefits that already exist. The new Post 9/11 GI Bill is for those veterans who served on active duty after September 10, 2001. The Post 9/11 GI Bill program will provide veterans, service members and members of the National Guard and Selected Reserve with educational assistance. This assistance will generally be in the form of tuition and fees, a monthly housing allowance, and a books and supplies stipend to assist you in reaching your educational goals. Although the new federal Post 9/11 GI Bill has been approved, details are still being worked out.

In the 2009-2011 Wisconsin budget, Governor Doyle has proposed changes to the Wisconsin GI Bill that could impact how you use and access the Wisconsin GI Bill. These proposals are being discussed by the legislature and are NOT FINAL. However, the proposed changes may be significant and you should take steps to stay informed. Regularly check the web site at  http://gibill.wisconsin.edu/ where information on the proposals as they move through the legislature will be posted.

Due to the complexity of the Federal GI Bill programs you will need to decide which program is best for you. Please note that the decision is irrevocable. If you need assistance with your decision, you can contact your County Veterans Service Officer (CVSO), research the information online at http://www.gibill.va.gov/GI_Bill_Info/benefits.htm#CH33, or call the Federal hotline number (1-888-GI BILL-1). We at the UW Oshkosh Veterans Office are not able to decide which benefit is best for you.

Summary: The federal and state governments continue to develop policy for the Post-9/11 GI Bill and the WI GI Bill and changes may not be finalized until later this summer. We recommend that you wait to decide which federal GI Bill is best for you. We stress the importance of keeping yourself up to date with these changes.
