The Radio-Television-Film major requires students to sample courses in each of the three areas of radio, television/video, and film production. After completing prerequisite courses, students may choose to concentrate in a specific discipline, such as radio station management, film/television directing, screenwriting, or broadcast news. The requirements for Radio-TV-Film majors and minors, and course descriptions can be found through the links at the Radio-TV-Film home page and at the UW Oshkosh course descriptions page.

The faculty and staff of Radio-TV-Film have built their program around a primary goal: to inspire students into elevating our culture through the creation of thoughtful, responsible communication. To accomplish this goal, RTF educates its students in the following ways:

Mastering professional skills and procedures:
We offer professional facilities at UW Oshkosh and teach professional procedures so that students can land entry level positions armed with an array of finely honed professional skills. Freshmen are encouraged to take hands-on courses and participate in hands-on activities. Juniors and Seniors are urged to take professional internships as a means of springboarding into the industry.

Unleashing creativity in the service of a point of view:
The Radio-TV-Film program views the media first and foremost as a means of communication. Accordingly, faculty help students formulate a strong point-of-view with defined objectives for each advanced project. (While production is encouraged in every mode, communication is most typically oriented toward a mainstream audience.) Students are taught both the conventions of audio/visual language and how to use a/v strategies in unconventional ways. Ultimately, students learn to use form as a flexible, creative tool placed in the service of content.

Developing an analytical approach to media communications:
Through history and theory courses, students will learn how their communications operate within a context of cultural, economic, and technological factors. We feel that through an understanding of this context, students stand a better chance of creating ethical, enlightened work

In addition, we encourage an integrated, interdisciplinary approach to media education. By learning as many facets of the field as possible, we believe our students gain in flexibility and depth of experience. For example, a student primarily interested in filmmaking will learn crucial management skills through radio, daily discipline and professional standards through television, blocking strategies through theater, marketing concepts through advertising, presentation skills through speech communication, and ethical and aesthetic development through communication theory. As a result, his/her advanced film project will stand a better chance of being an urgent, compelling work capable of winning festival awards and leading to additional opportunities after graduation.

Through our three-prong educational approach, we believe our students will develop the confidence and experience necessary to land entry level jobs, and the creativity and discipline needed to move up into leadership positions.
