Certificate in Health Care Management
The Master of Public Administration Program and the College of Business Administration at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh have offered a Graduate Certificate in Health Care Management since 2003. Eligible students can receive the certificate upon the successful completion of 15 credits chosen among graduate courses in public administration and business administration, including Health Care Agency Organization and Management, Health Care Administration Law, and Health Care Policy. MBA courses in marketing, finance, accounting, information systems, and leadership are also available.
Graduate certificates offered by the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh are designed to provide students with specialized knowledge and skills to foster personal and professional development. Specifically, the Graduate Certificate in Health Care Management is a post-baccalaureate study that provides an historical perspective, familiarizes students with important policy issues and disciplinary approaches, provides theoretical grounding, and conveys the tools and framework for resolving complex problems in health care management.
Because credits earned in the certificate program can also apply toward advanced degrees in public administration and business, students have an opportunity to use their graduate certificate as a step toward completing their master's degree.

Why a Graduate Certificate in Health Care Management?
In the past few decades, the health care environment has changed dramatically. Many who working the health care industry, particularly those who have achieved or aspire to management and leadership positions, have undergraduate or graduate degrees in business and finance or in clinical areas like medicine or nursing. Despite their extensive health care experience, they may lack the formal education and training in health care management.
Today’s health care managers require certain skills, training and expertise to help them address current and future challenges related to health care delivery and finance. This certificate program addresses those needs.
The Graduate Certificate in Health Care Management provides students with historical perspective, familiarizes them with policy issues and disciplinary approaches, offers theoretical grounding and conveys the tools and framework for resolving complex health care management problems.

What Kind of Courses Will I Take?
Students will earn 15 credits for the certificate completion; all academic work applying toward the certificate must be completed within four years. All students must take MPA 729 (Health Care Agency Organization and Management), preferably before taking other courses in the certificate program. In addition, students must complete 6 credits from Category A and 6 credits from Category B, as noted below.

Most of the graduate-level classes offered in the certificate program currently are taught on weekday evenings or on Saturdays as part of the MPA and MBA program. This ensures the broadest level of participation from students who work full-time during the week. Some courses (in business administration) are offered on-line; many others (such as those in public administration) augment the classroom component through on-line discussion groups. - Flexibility:
Because credits earned in the certificate program can also apply toward advanced degrees in public administration and business, students have the opportunity to use their graduate certificate as a step toward completing their master’s degrees. - Quality:
Our instructors are highly trained professionals. Most courses are taught by tenured or tenure-track faculty of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. The College of Business Administration offers its foundation courses through a consortium that includes professors from other UW system campuses. All courses satisfy the requirements of their respective colleges and departments with respect to teaching and course content.
How Do I Qualify for the Certificate Program?
Applicants must meet the UW-Oshkosh Graduate School requirement of a 2.75 overall grade point average or a 2.9 grade point average for the last half of the baccalaureate program. Admission on probation may be considered if applicants have a 2.25 overall G.P.A. and a 2.5 G.P.A. for the last half of their college work.
To be admitted to the Graduate Certificate in Health Care Management program, applicants will be required to submit the following:
- Official undergraduate transcripts showing completion of a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution;
- A brief application essay stating why they seek admission to the certificate program; and
- A completed application form.
