Inviting Convicts to College
The “Inviting Convicts to College” Program involves a non-credit college courses taught by criminal justice students on-site at area prisons (Taycheedah Correctional Institution and Oshkosh Correctional Institution). These courses are designed to prepare these potential university and college students for the university expectations at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh (and/or other area universities). These expectations include both the nature of university course-work expectations (i.e., writing papers, class discussion, exams, and so on) as well as, the requirements necessary to enroll at UWO (or other university or technical colleges specific to the prisoner-student's interest).
Part of the course takes the traditional form of college courses. The subject of these first two courses has been Convict Criminology. However, depending on textbook availability, other subjects can be covered: Introduction to Sociology, Introduction to Psychology, Introduction to Criminal Justice, and so on. (Prisoner-students are expected to attend class, pass exams, write papers, and participate in class discussions). The remaining part focuses on how to enroll at UWO (and/or other universities or technical colleges of interest), apply for financial aid, general expectations associated with college life, and so on.
