The George R. Soika Scholarship Fund This scholarship fund was a bequest of the late Professor George R. Soika, who established the liberal arts psychology major at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh . Dr. Soika was a man for all seasons--a clinical psychologist by training he was, at the same time, a meticulous scholar who stressed the precision and rigor of the scientific method. Professor Soika was a warm and caring teacher whose gentle sense of humor, skillful plays on words, and fascination with the subtleties of language brought a distinct character to his classroom. He challenged his students to examine and re-examine the premises of their lives. Over the years many of the young people he taught kept in touch with him, grateful for his devotion to teaching, and the sense of direction he provided their lives. A portrait photograph of Professor Soika is in the Psychology Conference Room, CF 21. The Soika Scholarship Committee will award one to two scholarships of $500 each, payable toward tuition in the following Fall semester to undergraduate psychology majors with one to three semesters remaining at the University. The applicant must be a full-time student and have a grade point average of at least 3.40. Each applicant must complete the student section of the application form along with a two-page essay that discusses the applicant's personal, educational, career plans and goals, and financial need (for Ghei and Dixon-Robinson Scholarships). Attach a recent progress summary or set of transcripts. In addition, three psychology faculty members must complete recommendation forms. No more than one recommendation may be written by a member of the Scholarship Committee
Som N. Ghei and Ram Kaur Ghei Scholarship Fund This scholarship fund was created in memory of Som N. Ghei, former professor of psychology at University of Wisconsin Oshkosh , and his mother, Ram Kaur Ghei. The family of Som N. Ghei has described their intentions regarding the scholarship as follows: We have established this scholarship for a female student in psychology in memory of Som N. Ghei (1925-1985) and his mother Ram Kaur Ghei (1903-1981). Dr. Ghei often spoke of how much his mother would have liked to obtain a higher education -- something that she was unable to do. In part because of this, he took special pleasure and satisfaction from encouraging and supporting his students to continue their studies. In turn, we are pleased to continue his intentions in the form of this scholarship award. Dr. Ghei's interests ranged widely from social issues to the fields of psychology, religion, literature, and philosophy. Within psychology, his major study and research was in personality theory, personality across cultures, consciousness, dreaming, and early memories. He enjoyed theoretical and philosophical inquiry and stimulated his students to similarly ask questions that would enlarge their fundamental human awareness and understanding. We hope that the selection criteria will be considered together in a flexible manner. The applicant's breadth of interests should be an additional consideration. The financial need of the applicant is a criterion, though this would not require financial aid office documentation. Intended graduate study in psychology could include various programs, such as educational psychology, eastwest psychology, clinical, or counseling psychology. The Ghei Scholarship Committee of the Psychology Department has determined that one or two $1,500 scholarships, payable toward tuition in the following Fall will be awarded to a female undergraduate Psychology major with one to three semesters remaining at the university. This person should be a full-time student and have a grade point average of at least 3.0. In addition, applicants should be able to demonstrate financial need, intend to pursue graduate education in psychology, and show a breadth of interest both within psychology and also beyond the discipline. If a student who receives this scholarship is accepted into the graduate program in Psychology at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, she is eligible for an additional $1300 to be applied to tuition in the first semester of full-time graduate study. Each applicant must submit a copy of her transcript, complete the student section of the form and ask three faculty members of the psychology department to complete recommendation forms. In addition, a two-page essay, which discusses your personal, educational, and career plans and goals, is required. A member of the Som Ghei Scholarship Committee may write no more than one recommendation.
Roy C. Dixon- Robinson Memorial Scholarship Established in honor of Roy C. Dixon-Robinson, faculty emeritus in psychology, who passed away on March 24, 1995. Dr. Dixon-Robinson earned his undergraduate degree from Wayne State University in Detroit, then spent 3 1/2 years in the Canadian Army. He returned to Wayne State University for a master's degree and a teaching position. He earned a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. After teaching at the University of Wisconsin Madison for four years, he joined the UW Oshkosh department of psychology in September 1960. Following his retirement in May 1985, he returned to the University and taught part-time until May, 1990. His avocation was music, in particular the pipe organ, and he played in churches in Detroit, Madison and Oshkosh. He spent 21 years as organist-choirmaster at Trinity Episcopal Church in Oshkosh. Criteria:
Each applicant must complete the student section of the application form along with a two-page essay that discusses the applicant's personal, educational, career plans and goals, and financial need (for Ghei and Dixon-Robinson Scholarships). Attach a recent progress summary or set of transcripts. In addition, three psychology faculty members must complete recommendation forms. No more than one recommendation may be written by a member of the Scholarship Committee.
