Background Materials Assessment ° Meeting Notes

LERT Charge Memo (Word) Ten-page memo of May 25, 2007 by Chancellor Wells and Provost Earns to members of the University-wide Liberal Education Reform Team detailing the Team Charge. The charge memo recommends adoption of a framework, including Guiding Principles and Learning Outcomes, similar to that put forward by the National Leadership council of LEAP in the College Learning for the New Global Century report. The charge memo also includes a summary of the Higher Learning Commission’s concerns regarding our General Education program.

Background Materials

Spellings Report (pdf) The 76-page report of the Commission Appointed by Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings, titled “A TEST OF LEADERSHIP: Charting the Future of U.S. Higher Education.” This report  spells out a set of expectations for American higher education that emphasizes 1) knowledge that contributes to economic prosperity and global competitiveness, 2) access to all Americans, throughout their lives, 3) improved efficiency in order to be more affordable, 4)  workplace skills needed to adapt to a rapidly changing economy, and 5)  adaptation to technology, changing demographics and globalization, including new providers and new paradigms, from for-profit universities to distance learning.

UW Oshkosh Self Study Link to the UW Oshkosh Accreditation website. Includes pdf of the Self Study for the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, January 2007.  The Self Study report provides a profile of UW Oshkosh, responses to concerns and advice given in the 1997 NCA evaluation, and analyses and interpretation of evidence of the University’s strengths and challenges relative to five criteria: Mission and Integrity; Preparing for the Future; Student Learning and Effective Teaching;  Acquisition, Discovery, and Application of Knowledge; and Engagement and  Service.

NSSE Statement from Provost Earns (Word) Link to a memo that contains a summary of UW Oshkosh’s response to Frequently Asked Questions about the 2004 National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) Report.    

Faculty concerns from Faculty SoTL Survey (Word) Brief summary of 150 responses to a 2004 survey (using open-ended questions) of the top five teaching challenges facing faculty at UW Oshkosh conducted by the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.

Assessment

New Leadership for Student Learning and Accountability: A Statement of Principles, Commitments to Action (PDF) A new report from AAC&U released on January 30, 2008 strives to strike a balance between responding to the public pressure for more accountability in measuring and reporting learning outcomes, yet firmly embracing the idea that individual institutions should decide for themselves what to measure and how to do so.
