Questions to be posted online for LERT members to respond to prior to July Workshop. Formulating Institution-wide Learning Goals The framework for a quality liberal educational program is a set of institution-wide essential learning outcomes for students (not just a list of courses to be taken). 1.Should we adopt and/or modify the essential learning outcomes presented in the AAC&U’s LEAP report (see pages 11-14) as our framework? Guiding Principles The National Leadership Council for LEAP has compiled a list of principles and recommendations to help students achieve learning outcomes identified as “essential” and to help campuses become more intentional about the essential outcomes and about effective educational practices. 2.Should we adopt and enact these principles and recommendations to guide liberal education reform at UW Oshkosh? Assessment Issues Once faculty agree on the outcomes it wants students to learn, it needs procedures for determining how well students reflect the kinds of learning identified in the learning goals. 3.How should we assess learning outcomes? 4.How should we encourage faculty to take responsibility for their own teaching? 5.How should we encourage students to take responsibility for their own learning? Process 6. How can the Resource Group help the Team to promote discussion and buy-in of the LERT initiative in fall? 7. How can we engage faculty in discussion of guiding principles and learning outcomes and assessment? (web page? newsletter? on-line small discussion groups? Presentations at department meetings?) 8. How can we gauge faculty support for guiding principles and learning outcomes and assessment?
