REVOLUTIONS IN MUSIC: HANNS EISLER REMEMBERS
A multi-media performance with Sabine Berendse and Paul Clements
Tuesday, April 24, 2012, at 7:00PM
Arts and Communication S147
Sabine Berendse and Paul Clements will be touring the US with their multi-media performance program “Revolutions in Music,” which is also the introduction of their new book, the first English-language publication of the interviews of actor Paul Bunge (who is Berendse’s father) with composer Hanns Eisler (1898-1962). In lively, witty conversations, Eisler retells his life story, from his Viennese beginnings as a favorite student of Arnold Schoenberg to the turbulent years of the Weimar Republic in Berlin, when Eisler discovered communism and collaborated with workers’ music and theater groups. During these years, Eisler also formed a partnership that was to shape his career and form the basis of his artistic identity: his collaboration with the radical playwright and poet Bertolt Brecht. When Hitler came to power, the Jew and open left-winger Eisler fled in fear of his life. He landed in Hollywood, where he composed many film scores and earned two Oscar nominations, and he again collaborated with Brecht. However, he was decried as “the Karl Marx of Music” and was eventually hounded out of the country by the House Un-American Activities Committee. Eisler resettled in Berlin and resumed his work with Brecht at the famed Berliner Ensemble, and he also composed the national anthem of the German Democratic Republic.
Oshkosh is one of twelve performances in nine American cities, including New York, Chicago, and Madison, that Berendse and Clements will offer. Their multi-media program will run approximately 75 minutes. Readings from the conversation will be accompanied by historical recordings and images from Eisler’s life and times. Admission is free.
The presentation is cosponsored by the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, the History Department, the University Honors Program, and the College of Letters and Science.
The book Ask Me More About Brecht: Conversations with Hanns Eisler is appearing this spring with Arc Publications in the United Kingdom. Copies can be purchased at the performance. For more information, please contact Dr. Alan Lareau (lareau@uwosh.edu or (920) 426-5654).
