Dinner Party

Nate and Cassie - the soon to be newlyweds - are coming over to my domicile tonight to have (a three course) dinner. They have been busy packing to move out of their apartment in Oshkosh to move next Tuesday to Dekalb, IL. Where is Dekalb anyway? I had to look at a map to even find out where it is. And on top of moving, which is a pain in of itself, they have to get ready for the rehearsal dinner, the reception, not to mention the actual wedding. So I rang them a couple of days ago to tell them they would be enjoying dinner at the casa de Tony so they wouldn't have to cook. As it is they are probably eating out of two dishes. (I am sure the rest of the dishes are all packed by now...)

On the menu:

Starter
Italian Bread and Cheese Soup
Main
Moroccan Spiced Fish over Lemongrass Rice
Dessert
Creme Caramel

Going to be honest. I have never made any of these dishes. But I am sure they'll turn out. They have to. After all, I'm making them.

After dinner (sorry for not taking phtoos of the meal, by the time I had the food prepared there wasn't any time to take photos of the meal; we were too hungry and distracted by conversation.) During dinner we polished off two bottles of wine which is why after dinner we decided to take photos of ourselves (?Don't know what to think about that.) Though I am sure the decision to document the mood of the evening was influenced by the near case of beer we proceeded to work on after finishing off the wine. Needless to say it was a good night: good food, long conversation, mild drinking. Probably the last time we'll get together at each others' places considering they are moving next Tuesday and who knows where I'll be in less than a month.

The Cats Have Arrived

Liam brought over Sherry's (and his) two cats, Duster and Leo, to live at the apartment whilst they travel to Haiti to teach children art for the next two weeks. Liam warned me the cats like rummaging through papers in their copious free time. And naturally, this was complicated by the fact that the apartment was a complete mess due to my "organizing" papers (life?). In truth little organization really occurred as the papers were still spread all about the floor, and as evidenced by the photos. Time to clean I suppose.

Goodies from the Blogosphere

Here are some provocative bits I have found in my wanderings around the blogosphere. They have got me going and should you as well if you mind art, philosophy, culture, and contemporary existence in the least:

Why the Art World is a Disaster by Roger Kimball
Response from artblog.net
Another reply, It's Our Values, Stupid by Edward_Winkleman

And since we're talking about art here is another thought provoking debate about Modernism over at artblog.net.

The Dutch national art collection is getting a good deal of attention (including this report in The New York Times [scroll down]) because its surplus is being sold via eBay. Edward_Winkleman with commentary: Fickle Collections

I mostly detest those blogs which direct you to every end of the web with endless links without ever providing any solid news or commentary. And here I am doing what I detest; promise to add some commentary as I work completely through them and get to ruminate over them a bit as they are pretty heady reads.

I have also updated my list of blogs that I read and linked many other friends websites. If you have another for me to add, or are feeling left out send me your link and I'll post it as long as its not your stupid inane myspace or facebook.

Picture from the 4th

Here is a picture I took on the 4th of July.

1.) I think it is a good representation of how I conceive:
     a. America (and especially on the 4th of July)
     b. contemporary life
     c. the eerie uncanny nature of liminal spaces
     d. more than likely all of the above because Tony can be
so indecisive when it comes to these matters.
     e. In fact, the image is cliche and a hack of some sort of
cross between Edward Hopper and Tina Barney.

Well, that got cynical toward the end. Thoughts?

You're Blog Misses You

Yesterday I received the following email from Cassie.

Do you have a phone yet, if so, call me!
If not, we should probably get together soon.
Also, your blog misses you!
Love,
Cassie

I was thinking the same: that I haven't done the blog thing in awhile, and I probably should get back into the swing of things now that I have been back for nearly a month's time. I don't want people thinking I've stopped blogging. I'm not done with it yet. It's just things have been crazy over here ever since getting back, as I found I had virtually no money left (which is ok, I am used to it I guess. It happens to me every time I return from Europe, especially England...wonder why. I think it's England's bloody expensive cost of living, or maybe it's just the shitty American economy, or both).

Anyway, I’ve adapted, trying to be more frugal, you know (yet still remaining happy and satisfied and content) in coping with my lack of income at present. Otherwise I have been keeping busy looking for jobs (both teaching for the fall and temporary work in the summer), going to class, and otherwise surviving on the little I do have.

My classes are unexpectedly time consuming and full of busy work, but they are requirements and if I want to graduate in August I had better finish them. It probably doesn't help that I also have to finish up my art history thesis paper that I should have finished while in Manchester, not to mention all the student teaching paperwork (bureaucracy) I also have to finish before August.

So that is what I have been preoccupied with over the last month. Also about my calling you: If I haven't called you it doesn't mean that I don't like you it's just, in a daft rush, I left my mobile in the taxi I took to the airport in New York after the NAEA convention, so I have lost all of my contacts. I do have a replacement phone, with the same number as before. Call me or email me your mobile number so that I can re-enter your number back into my phone since I have lost them. (More like lost my phone and have not memorized them due to the ease of the 'Contacts' list.)
