Spring 2007 Schedule

Here is our tentative list of events that SOFA has planned for the Spring 2007 Semester. Of note: while most of our events are set in stone, our later meetings have some details to work out and are subject to change. Any changes will result in letting you know them via email and postings on our bulletin board out side of room A/C S213. All SOFA meetings are held in the AC Building in room S213 and take place at 8:30PM on Tuesday nights unless otherwise noted.

Monoprinting
Tonight we will talk about the semester's list of activities. We’re open to suggestions regarding our list of events. Have a suggestion? Let us know. After a brief introduction we will be doing monoprints. They are done by drawing with oil pastels on plexiglass and then a print is made of the drawing you made on the plexi. They are fun, light, quick, colorful, and expressionisty (is that a word?). We will print them on found and recycled papers.

Tuesday, 6 February 2007
Paste Paper
Smear it, smudge it, make swirly patterns, or scrape it away. Make abstract designs and patterns using found tools to move paint around paper. After the paper is made you can use them as posters for decorations, cut them up for scrap booking, draw on top of the paste paper or use other media to embellish.

Tuesday, 13 February 2007
Watercolor

Brush up on your water coloring skills as we make watercolor paintings or other pictures to apply to hand made cards for any occasion…like Valentines Day.

Tuesday, 20 February 2007
Monoprints...Again
Tonight we will be doing monoprints again. This time we can use our paste paper and water-colored papers to print on in order to get prepared for our annual SOFA exhibition in the Annex Gallery. The exhibition, like the prints will have the themes of fun, light, quick, colorful, and expressionisty (is that a word?). We will also print them on found and recycled papers.

Tuesday, 27 February 2007
Batik
Once again, due to its popularity last year, we will hold a Batik workshop. Join us to catch up a project we probably last did in elementary school. Make yourself a pillow case, table cloth, or decorative wall hanging using this wax resist, cloth dying technique.

Tuesday, 6 March 2007
Hemp Jewelry
Can’t afford to keep up with the latest fashions, make your own using hemp. When classes have you all knotted up, unwind and turn your energy towards making knots with hemp necklaces, bracelets, or other jewelry accessories with beads.

!Poloroid Transfer has been rescheduled for Tuesday 9 April. This workshop will take place down at Stolley Studio (on Main and 8th). More details to come.

OFF WEEK, Let's take a break!

After all that we have finished this week will be our off week. SOFA officers will be traveling to New York for the National Art Education Conference to learn and bring back new ideas for SOFA activities and to show others what we do at SOFA.

Spring Break!

No SOFA tonight, enjoy Spring Break.

Tuesday, 27 March 2007
Ceramic Pinch Pots and Rattles

Join us to form small clay pots and rattles using both pinch and coil methods. This activity will take place over two weeks, the first of which will have us forming and constructing clay slabs into forms. They will then be fired in the kiln in order for us to glaze them in the following weeks.

Tuesday, 2 April 2007
Metal Embossing

Create a three dimensional affect by using the relatively two dimensional relief process. Thin sheets of metal (tin and aluminum) are given form by pressing tools into the surface of the metal sheet. The final products can be photo frames, wall hangings, or additions to larger drawings or other artworks.

Tuesday, 9 April 2007
Poloroid Transfer
Let’s learn how to make Poloroid transfers with Laurie Rieder. Laurie will show us how to make images by taking photos with a Poloroid camera, but then instead of letting the photograph develop on the paper, the image is transferred to other papers and allowed to develop. The images take on a blurred, contemplative, austere, contemporary mood that challenge the viewer to rethink how they see the subject of the photograph by appearing in a different way than usually seen.

Tuesday, 16 April 2007
Glaze Your Ceramics
Follow up on the pinched cups, bowls, pots, and rattles you created last week by glazing your recently fired pieces. They will need to be fired one last time, after which you take them home for either functional or decorative uses.

Tuesday, 23 April 2007
Indian Cloth Printing

Stamp it up with this traditional Indian artform. A variety of stamps are dipped into fabric paint and printed onto the cloth that resemble tapestries. The busy, complex designs often work on the premise more is more, and better. Stamps are often layered and printed in many colors that are representative of contemporary life.

Tuesday, 30 April 2007
Scratch Paper
Tonight we will scratch away the surface of this special paper to reveal the funky, colorful under layer of this paper. Images or designs may be scratched into the paper unavoidably reveal negative and positive spaces.
