Mailing Lists

We have the following campus mailing lists you can subscribe to:

• Getting Plone help - for questions you might have about Plone, errors you run into, or if you want to know if Plone can do something you need on your site.  Anyone from a @uwosh.edu email address can email this list.  The Plone help archives are available.
• Plone users (members only) - general issues and questions related to normal use and customization of Plone at UW Oshkosh.  The Plone users archives are available.
• Plone developers (members only) - programming, administration, and deployment-related technical issues on using Plone at UW Oshkosh. The Plone developers archives are available.

You can also send an email to the plone-users@lists.sourceforge.net list, which is read by the Plone community worldwide.

Campus Chat Room

We also have set up a campus chat room where you can get more immediate feedback.  The chat room called "plone".  

Chatting using iChat on Mac OS X

With iChat, you must first have set it up to connect to the campus instant messaging server. 

To set up iChat, go to iChat Preferences, Accounts, add an account of type "Jabber" - use port 5222 and DO NOT CHECK the Use SSL box.  Your account name is your @uwosh.edu email address, and your password is your email account password.

From Randall Loch:

• make sure the server says im.uwosh.edu
• and the auto discovery is unchecked, that doesn't work for some reason
• make sure the port is 5222 and the use ssl is not checked

To use the "plone" chat room, use File -> "Go to chat room", choose your uwosh.edu account, then enter "plone" as the room name, then press the Go button.

Chatting using the Java client

You can also use the Java client - launch it by going to im.uwosh.edu and pressing either the Start button in the middle of the page or the Use Java Plug-in button at top of the page.

To Join a Conference Room

You can talk to multiple online contacts at the same time by joining a conference room from the list of predetermined conference rooms displayed. You can also invite other contacts to participate in the chat. Conferences unlike Chats, do not disappear after all the participants have left the conference. Conferences remain in the system so that users can join and leave them at their convenience. Also, the participants can be assigned various access levels in a conference. For example, Manage, Read, Write or None.

To join a conference room:

1. Select the Conference Tab in the Main window to view a list of conferences.
2. Enter the conference by selecting Enter Conference from the Tools menu or by double clicking on the conference.
The conference window is displayed with the name of the conference in the title bar.

3.Once the conference window is open, you and the other participants simply type your messages and click the Send button. Each entry is displayed in the upper message pane.
4. To invite other contacts to participate in a chat, select Invite Others from the File menu of the Conference window.

IRC

If you would like to connect with Plone developers around the world in real-time, ideally you whould use an IRC client to connect to the #plone channel on freenode.net.

IRC ports are blocked on campus but you can connect to it via freenode.net's webchat gateway.

LodgeIt Code Snippet Sharing Tool ("pastebin")

Our local LodgeIt tool is located at http://plone4.webcluster.uwosh.edu:5000/ and is accessible only from campus computers (and is not accessible over WIFI).

You can paste snippets of code (any text), choose a syntax for highlighting (eg. HTML, Python), then share the snippet with others via its URL.  This is particularly useful if you are in the Plone campus chat room or in a campus instant message session with someone else.
