Mission
The goal of the Physical Education Teacher Preparation major is to provide students with a professional program leading to a Bachelor of Science in Education degree. Successful completion of this program results in PK-12 state licensure in physical education.
Teacher Comment
The Physical Education Teacher Preparation program has updated its curriculum for the Twenty-first Century. This new program took effect for all Pre K-12 physical education majors who entered the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh in fall 2000. As a result of this update, courses associated with adventure outdoor education have been added, as well as more physical activities, which are cooperative in nature versus sport oriented. The number of teaching majors has almost doubled in recent years from approximately 100 students to over 180 students. Typically, between 20 and 25 students graduate each year with a teaching licensure. Our students are provided with many “hands on” opportunities to enhance their educational experience in order to develop their own style and expertise. During 2003-04, we have had students gaining practical experience in the following school districts: Appleton, Berlin, Fond du Lac, Green Lake, Hortonville, Kaukauna, Little Chute, Menasha, Neenah, New London, Omro, Oshkosh, Ripon, Waupun, and Winneconne. For example two students have just secured long-term substitute teaching positions before the completion of their student teaching experiences and began their work for the Green Bay Public Schools in March 2004.
