The Proteomics and Functional Genomics (PFG) Scholars Program will prepare enthusiastic and dedicated students for careers in biology, chemistry or computer science.
- Financially needy students will be supported so that they can concentrate on reaching their goals. The program will provide scholarship money equal to a student’s level of FAFSA "need", up to $10,000 per year for the next 2 years, at least.
- Students will be trained so they will be eligible for graduate school or for many types of jobs immediately after graduation.
This is, however, a program in proteomics and functional genomics!
What is proteomics and functional genomics?
"Proteomics and Functional Genomics" studies ALL proteins and ALL genes in a group of cells simultaneously. It is a very important, state-of-the-art approach to just about any problem in biology or biochemistry. This approach requires not only biologists and biochemists, but also computer scientists, because an enormous amount of information is generated, and computers are needed to analyze the data. This has led to a new field within computer science called bioinformatics. Bioinformatics involves the study of algorithms that search huge gene sequences for patterns of particular importance, such as those that may indicate the likely future occurrence of a disease, and also algorithms that visualize protein structures using the latest techniques in three-dimensional graphics. People with some training in biology, chemistry AND computer science and now in VERY high demand.
Program Objectives
- Train students in biology, chemistry AND computer science so that they will be highly desirable as employees or graduate students
- Supply sufficient funds so that students can concentrate on their studies and their career for the first two years of college, at least.
- Provide peer and faculty mentoring so that PFG Scholars will move smoothly through UW Oshkosh and be well-prepared for life after graduation
Advantages of This Program
- Receive training in a highly desirable, state-of-the-art approach to science.
- Form a cohort with other members of the group by enrolling in the same classes, by housing together on the same dormitory floor and by participating in social events and field trips with your mentors. Fall 2009 and 2010 students were housed on the same floor as students in the UWO Honors Program
- Receive tutoring and advice from faculty and older students
- Act as a peer mentor to younger PFG Scholars
- Participate in research and internships
