Summer Course Offerings

Special Education-100 Remediating Specific Language Handicaps in Reading and Spelling. (3 credits) Systematic drill and phonemes, affixes, and roots is used to develop the ability to read and therefore, comprehend college-level textbooks and materials. Similar drill is employed to teach spelling. In addition, syllabication for both reading and spelling purposes is also taught. This course also offers direct instruction to remediate the writing skills deficits by providing the participant with a variety of methods and applications aimed at increasing the participants' knowledge and skill with the intent that participants will apply these skills to passing English 101. Students also learn study skills such as notetaking and reading texts for comprehension through integration of activities in this course with the required 2 credit Active Lifestyle course. This course does not count toward the 120 credits necessary for graduation.

Physical Education-105 Active Lifestyle. (2 credits) A contemporary examination of the effects of lifestyle, wellness, and health promotion on the individual. Instruction in procedures for self-evaluation as well as an individualized exercise program for the development of health fitness. Participation in a planned program of aerobic activity is required. This course meets the 2 credit physical education requirement and is a required general education course.

Special Topics Areas

Transition Issues. In addition to the courses listed above, students attend a"transition issues" course. The course content covers career development issues including helping students research careers and select a major; study skills including time management, notetaking and reading textbooks effectively and a variety of adjustment to college life topics, including living with a roommate and campus safety.

Mathematics. Project Success does not offer a credit bearing mathematics course during the summer term. However, during summer, we spend extensive time assessing each student's current level of mathematics proficiency in an effort to place him or her into the proper UW Oshkosh mathematics course. For students who have moderate to severe difficulties with mathematics, Project Success does offer a 3-credit Direct Instruction Algebra course each fall semester that helps to prepare them for their first university mathematics course, generally, 67-100, Basic Algebra.
