Study intensive Spanish.      Live with a host family.

Universidad de Salamanca

The Universidad de Salamanca was founded in 1218 and remains the oldest University in Spain. A UNESCO World Heritage City, it is also one of the oldest in Europe. Over the past forty years, more than 150,000 students and teachers from around the world have studied at the Universidad de Salamanca.

Universidad de Salamanca-Cursos Internacionales

Intensive language courses are taught at the Universidad de Salamanca-Cursos Internacionales, which is the intensive language division of the university offering Spanish as a Foreign Language courses at all levels. All participants become official Universidad de Salamanca students, with the same access to all University facilities and services as Spanish students.

Spanish Learning (SL)

Spanish Learning (SL) is an organization which assists individual students and groups traveling to intensive language schools in Salamanca. SL makes all individual and group arrangements from airport pickup to airport drop off and serves as liaison between the student and Cursos Internacionales or the student and the host family when necessary. Students who participate through a one-month group option will travel to and from Salamanca as a group, with flight arrangements made through the UW Oshkosh Office of International Education and arrangements in Spain made through SL. Students who travel independently also have the option of using SL's services.

A representative from SL meets the individual or group at the airport in Madrid and accompanies the individual or group to Salamanca (June group or individual travelers) or on an entry tour to various Spanish cities (January group). SL staff are also available to answer student questions throughout the experience and in case of emergency. Services through SL include: airport pickup (Madrid’s Barajas airport), host family selection and introduction, orientation, escort to the placement test, meeting after the first day of class to resolve any issues with class placement and host family placements, 24-hour emergency phone contact, field trips, taxi service to field trip departure sites; transportation to Madrid at the end of the program; airport drop off (Madrid’s Barajas airport). UW Oshkosh students meet up with students from other parts of the world for many of the SL events.

Individuals who travel on their own (apart from a group) and who do not elect programming through Spanish Learning have the option of traveling to/from Salamanca on their own to study at Cursos Internacionales and/or through the Integrated Studies Program at any time of year. See the Cursos Internacionales course schedule for detailed class start and class end dates (click on "Spanish Courses" and "Spanish Language and Culture Courses"). The UW Oshkosh OIE will enroll participants through the program at Cursos Internacionales initially; participants are responsible for making all other arrangements pertaining to their travel and stay in Salamanca.

UW Oshkosh Faculty Leader (June only)

A UW Oshkosh faculty member accompanies our student group either from UW Oshkosh or from the airport in Madrid to Salamanca and remains in Salamanca for the first four or five days of the group program.

DPI Study Abroad Requirement for Foreign Language Teachers

UW Oshkosh students who study in Salamanca for a minimum of 30 days (26 in January) satisfy this requirement. Students from other campuses will need to check with their home institution to find out whether this program meets their requirement.

Student Testimonial

Lauren Lidbetter
June 2008

It has been a great 4 ½ years in college and as I am approaching graduation in a couple of weeks the only regret I have is not to have studied abroad more. I meet the most amazing people while studying abroad, had the best experiences and am sad that I will never have such an amazing opportunity again. Sure I will travel to Europe many more times in my life but living there and studying there was unforgettable and one of the best learning experiences ever. I have been looking at my pictures about every other day. Since we have left the people that are in Oshkosh from the group have meet up a few times. It has been weird going from seeing these people almost everyday to once a week or not at all. We communicate on facebook but it is not the same by any means. Many members in the group are thinking about doing another trip in January 2009. I would love to go so maybe I will see where I am at with my job. One thing is for sure, I will be recommending the travel abroad program to all of my friends still in school.

Holly Waterstreet
fall semester 2006

Now that I have been here for a over a month, I just wanted to let you know how things are going with Spanish Learning in case you need a reference for the company for future students studying abroad here. I am sooo thankful that I decided to go through Spanish Learning! Paco (Javier) has been a tremendous help and he has eliminated any doubts that I could possibly have about studying here. He stays in contact with me every week (at first every day) to make sure that my living arrangements, food, and academic needs are being met. He really wants us to have the best possible experience here. If I have a problem, I have his cell phone number and I can call him at any time for help. He also has really gone further than I could've expected from him...He also makes sure that I make the excursions with Cursos Internacionales and informs me of all the other events within Salamanca that I have the ability to visit. The first couple of days that I was here he made sure that I was familiar with the city and gave me helpful advice about the different locations that are good for me to go to as well as those that could be potentially dangerous for me. He always looks out for our best interests. Also, my parents decided to come and visit me and he is helping me make all the arrangements for them which isn't really part of the program-but a huge help to my family. I would definitely recommend this company for any future students who want to study in Salamanca. It is very trustworthy and like having family here in Salamanca with you.

Course(s)

All courses are taught in Spanish, with class enrollment at 15 students maximum (14 maximum during July & August). Completion of Spanish 332 (Culture and Civilization of Spain) before traveling to Spain is highly recommended though not required.

Pre-travel Course Dates

Inability or failure to attend may affect your participation, course grades and ability to receive and use financial aid. If you cannot attend, you must indicate this on your study abroad application.

For spring interim 2009 (group program ONLY):
Saturday, April 18, 2009, afternoon time/location t.b.a.

Selecting Courses

Make an appointment with an advisor in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures Spanish Division to determine course enrollment in Salamanca and course equivalencies at UW Oshkosh. Print and use the Course Enrollment Approval Form during your meeting.

When there is a difference between levels within the same course, you will be placed into the appropriate level after taking a placement exam in Spain. Your Course Enrollment Approval Form will show the lowest level into which you must place in order to receive transfer credit. If you place lower AND you have elected to study through Spanish Learning, SL will contact the UW Oshkosh OIE to discuss options and to ensure that course transfer is still possible.

Course Options

Choose from courses offered at the INTERMEDIATE, ADVANCED AND PROFICIENCY LEVELS (except during the modular program).

January & June Courses

Join a UW Oshkosh student group for a one-month intensive language course.

Studying through Cursos Internacionales

Assignments and Exams

Participants should expect to spend anywhere from 1-3 hours on assignments outside of class, depending on their level of fluency, the number of class hours they are taking and class level. Participants should also expect to take exams.

Changing Course Enrollment through Cursos Internacionales

Students who want to change course enrollment may do so for a fee. However, students who change course enrollment while in Spain will not be guaranteed credit transfer upon return to UW Oshkosh. All course enrollment changes which take place in Salamanca should be approved in advance by the advisor who approved credit transfer for you originally.

Optional Conversation Practice - Afternoons in July & August only

If you want additional practice, enroll in Conversation Outside the Classroom. These classes have a maximum of 10 students per group and meet in coffee shops and cafés in Salamanca. No UW Oshkosh credit will be awarded.

Spanish Culture Courses - July & August only

Universidad de Salamanca - Cursos Internacionales also offers cinema, dance, guitar, songs and cooking. No UW Oshkosh credit will be awarded. Fees are payable directly to Cursos Internacionales.

Excursions

Although a number of excursions will be built into your program if you are traveling through Spanish Learning, Cursos Internacionales also offers organized field trips to such cities such as Toledo, Segovia, Ávila, El Escorial, Madrid, Barcelona, Sevilla, Granada, and others. These tend to fill to capacity very early during the summer months; a few of the trips actually fill before our group arrives in Spain. If you would like to participate on one or more of these field trips, you may do so for a fee (payable directly to Cursos Internacionales after arrival in Salamanca). You may choose to reserve a seat on Cursos Internacionales-sponsored field trips after arriving in Salamanca, or you may make reservations before traveling to Spain using the Optional field trip form-Cursos Internacionales. Check the Spanish Learning itinerary for your program to ensure that you have free time and/or are not already traveling to a particular destination before signing up. Then, contact Cursos Internacionales directly for information on excursions during your stay in Spain.

Once you have reserved a seat for one or more field trips, you cannot cancel your participation or receive a refund from Cursos Internacionales, even if you withdraw from the study abroad program in Salamanca completely.

Accommodation & Meals

Homestay

While studying in Salamanca, students live in accommodations in private residences with native Spanish speakers located around Salamanca. The homestay hosts provide a private room and three meals daily (meals must be eaten in the home). UW Oshkosh Spanish Division faculty recommend that two to three UW Oshkosh students stay at each homestay location. Families may also be hosting students from other parts of the world at the same time. Host family information will be provided approximately two weeks prior to departure.

Group Program: The homestay experience, including laundry and ironing service, is included in your program fee.

Individual Option through Spanish Learning: The homestay experience, including laundry and ironing service, is included in the Spanish Learning program fee.

Individual Option on your own: Students NOT working through Spanish Learning pay host families directly while in Salamanca. All fees are pre-determined by Cursos Internacionales. Laundry and ironing service is not automatically included in your homestay fee.

Student Dormitories (July & August only)

Dormitories are an option for students studying through either Cursos Internacionales or Programa Especial Integrado in July & August. These dormitories are not used by Spanish students during the summer. Therefore, depending on the international student mix in the dormitories at the time you are there, the common spoken language in them may very likely be English. The UW Oshkosh OIE and Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures Spanish Division do not recommend living in a dormitory.

Dormitory fees include three meals daily and packed lunches when students are participating on excursions through Cursos Internacionales.

Student-to-student Advice

  • I...definitely encourage [students] to talk in Spanish as much as possible.  A month is a significant amount of time if they apply themselves.  There are a lot of big groups here from U. S. schools on the east and west coast….and all they do is talk English to each other.  Even during some excursions, they go off in their own corners and talk English…even while the guide is explaining things.  As a result, they don't represent their university in a very positive way.  I would encourage students from Oshkosh to be different.  Also, have an open mind.  The food is good here….but different.  The people here eat a lot….but walk a lot as well.  The people in the stores are not that friendly or helpful.  And I'm not the first person to say that!  I've talked with my professors here, etc., and they all agree with me.  So should the students go shopping, they shouldn't be surprised.  And in general, try not to bring too much on the plane as carry-on luggage!  Europe is really cracking down on hand baggage….especially London.  Holly and I had quite the ordeal on the way over here.  All we had were backpacks….and they made us check them as luggage because British Airways thought they were too big.  Literally, the backpacks weren't the exact dimensions they wanted!  As a result, we missed our connecting flight, arrived in Madrid late….and I didn't have my luggage for a week!  So I don't know if the students are traveling through London.  Whether they are or aren't, I’m sure that things will quiet down by January, but it's better to be safe than sorry.
