Join a group of UW Oshkosh students and experience Creole and Louisiana bayou country culture while exploring the relationship between history, culture and disaster response. Participate in five full days of service work while you learn from a Native American community in Louisiana that has been devastated by hurricanes. Process your experience through journaling, discussion, field visits, literary productions of Native American and African American authors from the Gulf Coast and a reflection paper. Develop a personal connection with communities outside of Wisconsin and a sense of citizenship in the world as you begin to appreciate regional and ethnic cultures and heritages and understand race, ethnicity, class and culture in the U.S. and in your own community.
Service learning activities are assigned on the first day of service during orientation; participants will not have further information related to the actual service activity in advance. The work will take place outside and may include painting, gutting, demolishing or rebuilding houses and is supervised by professional construction managers. Please remember that you are responding to needs in other peoples' lives - you'll learn more about these needs after arrival on site.
See the LA United Methodist Disaster Response brochure for more information.
This is an alcohol- and drug-free program. Any participants found using or under the influence are sent home immediately at their own expense.
All of the information included here is subject to change. Modifications may be required depending on the exigencies of the situation.
