Eligibility
What are the eligibility requirements?
For faculty-led Study Abroad Programs eligible students have a minimum G.P.A. of 2.5 and are in good standing, have the consent of the instructor, and meet the eligibility requirements for any courses being offered abroad. Graduate students must be in full standing. Additional eligibility requirements may be listed on individual program pages.
Students who do not meet the minimum eligibility requirements should contact the faculty leader for the study abroad program of their choice. In some cases, the eligibility requirements can be waived.
For Student Exchange Programs students from all academic disciplines with a minimum of 30 credits earned by the program start date are eligible. Eligible students will have a 3.0 G.P.A. (2.5 for Canada), be in good standing and have a clean disciplinary file. Students interested in studying in a foreign language must also meet proficiency requirements as listed on each program's web page. These programs give preference to students who have prepared themselves by taking coursework related to the host country.
Is the application process competitive?
For most faculty-led study abroad programs the application process is not competitive. Seats are offered on a first-come, first-served basis to eligible students either until the program is full or until the application deadline, whichever occurs first. If seat assignment is competitive, this will be clearly stated in the application section of the web page for your program.
For all exchange programs and for some faculty-led programs, the application process is competitive (this will be clearly stated in the application section of the faculty-led program's web page). In this case, applications are accepted through the application due date.
If on the date that applications are due there are more applications than seats available, the top applicants will be selected. Where two or more applicants have similar qualifications, graduation dates and/or the date on which the application was received may be used to select applicants. Preference in selecting applicants will go to UW Oshkosh students.
Selected applicants will be notified and must make their first program payment on time in order to retain their seat. Applicants who are not selected will be refunded the application fee.
Can I apply to participate if I am not a student at UW Oshkosh?
Students from other universities may apply to participate on faculty-led study abroad programs, but preference in selecting applicants will go to UW Oshkosh students through the application deadline date. If seats are still available as of the next business day following the application deadline, seats will be assigned to students from other universities and community members in the order in which they submitted completed applications. (See Application)
Students applying through the National Student Exchange may participate on faculty-led study abroad programs. Applications from National Student Exchange students will not be held until the application deadline for seat assignment. Applications from National Student Exchange students will be considered along with applications from UW Oshkosh students; seat assignments will be given in the order in which the OIE receives completed applications from eligible applicants.
Students from other universities and National Student Exchange students may not apply to participate on student exchange programs.
Can I apply to participate if I am not a student at all?
Community members may apply to many faculty-led study abroad programs, but preference in selecting applicants will go to UW Oshkosh students through the application deadline date. If seats are still available as of the next business day following the application deadline, seats will be assigned to students from other universities and community members in the order in which they submitted completed applications. (See Application)
Community members may not apply to participate on student exchange programs.
Can I apply to participate if I have a disciplinary file?
The University of Wisconsin Oshkosh is committed to maintaining an academic and social environment which promotes the intellectual and personal development of students and the safety and welfare of all group members. The ability to participate depends on conduct both before leaving UW Oshkosh and while abroad. Applicants with a disciplinary file will therefore be required to agree, in writing, to the following conditions of participation:
- Applicants with one or more underage-drinking violations who are no longer underage and who do not meet the criteria below must agree to drink responsibly.
- Applicants who meet the following criteria must agree not to consume alcohol for any reason while abroad: one or more underage-drinking violations AND if one or more of the following applies: still underage, OWI violations and/or drug use violations.
- Applicants with one or more OWI violations must agree not to consume alcohol or drive for any reason while abroad.
- Applicants with one or more drug use violations must agree not to use or possess drugs while abroad and not to associate with anyone using or possessing drugs while abroad.
