Study Abroad Application Process
Your ENTIRE study abroad application must be complete
BY THE APPLICATION DEADLINES
in order to be considered for the State of Wisconsin Study Abroad Grant.
Your FAFSA must be filed at least two weeks prior to the study abroad application deadline in order to be considered for the State of Wisconsin Study Abroad Grant.
What do I need to know BEFORE I apply?
It is essential that you understand your responsibilities and obligations- both academic and financial - BEFORE you apply to study abroad.
- Attend an information meeting (optional).
- Read the eligibility criteria.
- Read the web page for your study abroad program.
- Write all pre-/post-travel class dates in your calendar. Missing a session may make you ineligible for program participation.
- Write the Study Abroad Orientation dates in your calendar. All participants must attend from beginning to end. Inability or failure to attend orientations may affect your participation. Approximately 95% of our participants bring one or more family members, though family participation is optional.
- Read the Study Abroad Handbook (the menu for this handbook is on the left).
- Write all payment deadlines in your calendar. If you aren't the person who will be making payments, share this information with the person who will be.
The web page and handbook tell you what you need and want to know; reading them will make a positive difference for you in the long-run. If you choose not to read this information, you will likely miss deadlines and find the study abroad and related processes very challenging.
What does the application process entail?
There are three steps in the application process. You may choose to complete these in order or work on all three steps simultaneously.
STEP I can be completed on line. STEP II requires completion of paper forms. Once you have completed STEP II
- you may be conditionally admitted into your program of choice;
- your application may be sent to your faculty leader for review; or
- your application may be placed on the waiting list.
STEP III requires you to apply for a passport, disclose medical information and turn in additional program-related materials (if required).
How do I get a seat on a program?
Seats are assigned in the order in which qualified applicants have completed STEPS I & II (non-competitive programs) or based on eligibility criteria (competitive programs) provided STEP III has also been completed by the Friday following the application deadline.
This means that you may be conditionally admitted following completion of steps I & II, but NOT receive a seat if you then fail to complete STEP III on time.
If you are on the waiting list, you may receive a seat if applicants who have been conditionally admitted have not completed STEP III by the deadline.
After the deadline, seats are assigned in the order in which qualified applicants have completed all three steps (non-competitive programs only).
Most UW Oshkosh programs are non-competitive. If a program is competitive, this will be clearly indicated in the "Apply" section of the web page for that program.
