Gullickson, Koker each receive Rosebush Professorship


OSHKOSH – Two University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh faculty members each have been awarded a 2004-2005 John McNaughton Rosebush Professorship for excellence in teaching, professional achievement and public service.

Andrea Gullickson , professor and music department chair, and John Koker, professor and mathematics department chair, will receive their awards at the university’s opening day ceremony beginning at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 7 in the Music Hall of the Arts and Communication Center, 926 Woodland Ave.

They will each receive a $1,850 stipend to fund a special teaching, service or scholarship project.

“The history and tradition of the Rosebush Professorship reflects UW-Oshkosh’s commitment to the recognition of excellence,” said Chancellor Richard H. Wells. “This year’s recipients have excellent credentials and both have made outstanding contributions to the university and the community.”

Gullickson joined the UW-Oshkosh music faculty in 1994. Since then, she has released five critically acclaimed chamber music CDs on major labels, with distribution in more than 20 countries. In 2001, she received the Oshkosh Northwestern endowed professorship.

An oboist, she is an active chamber musician, recitalist and concerto soloist under the professional management of Great Lakes Performing Artist Associates.

She has reintroduced important historic works and premiered several works with recordings and concert tours throughout Australia, China, the Czech Republic, Poland, Russia and the United States.

Gullickson has been an adjudicator for music contests, presented master classes and performances in schools throughout the state and given benefit performances for organizations such as the Oshkosh Symphony, the Oshkosh Public Library and the Oshkosh Public Museum.

She earned a bachelor’s degree at Michigan State, a master’s at Northwestern University and a doctorate at the University of Iowa.

John Koker
Koker, who joined UW-Oshkosh in 1991, has served as math chair since 2000. In 2002, he received the UW-Oshkosh Distinguished Teaching Award.

He is part of a recent project aimed at boosting the math skills of Menominee Indian School District middle school students. The project is supported by a $154,000 grant from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction’s Mathematics and Science Program Partnership. It provides workshops for middle school teachers that emphasize mathematical reasoning and creating a problem-solving environment in the classroom.

Koker is in the top quarter of all mathematicians, based on the number of times his work has been reviewed by the journal Mathematical Review. His primary areas of research include the theory of rings and modules, mathematics education and graph theory.

He earned a bachelor’s degree from St. Norbert College, a master’s from Purdue University and a doctorate from UW-Milwaukee.
