3 American Indian leaders to discuss gaming issues
April 10
OSHKOSH—Three Native American leaders will provide cultural
perspectives on Indian gaming and Gov. Doyle’s agreements
with Wisconsin tribes at a public forum April 10 at
the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh.
Casinos and Tribal Rights will be from 7 to 8:30
p.m. Thursday, April 10, in the Wisconsin Room of Reeve
Memorial Union, 748 Algoma Blvd. The event is free and open to the
public.
The event is sponsored by the UW Oshkosh Intertribal Pre-College
Program, which is committed to encouraging American Indian high
school students to attend college and helping them prepare for the
college experience. The project is in its sixth year.
American Indians on the panel – who will provide cultural
perspectives on Indian gaming and Gov. Doyle’s agreements
with Wisconsin tribes – are:
· William Gollnick, general manager of the
Oneida Tribe of Wisconsin.
· Alan Caldwell, director of the Menominee
Indian Culture Center.
· Don Carufel, Objibwe Native American studies
instructor.
“All three will share their unique perspectives on the issue,”
said Judith Hankes, a professor of mathematics
education and co-director of the Intertribal Pre-College Program.
“Issues they will discuss include why it is that Native Americans
are able to have casinos, how gaming funds are distributed and what
impact casinos have had on Native communities.”
