- UW Oshkosh participates in the Wisconsin Energy Initiative and undertakes a student-led campus sustainability audit.
- An environmental studies major is established.
- The University officially endorses the Earth Charter, a document that advocates for a just, sustainable and peaceful global society.
2003
- UW Oshkosh becomes the first Wisconsin university to join the Environmental Protection Agency's Green Power Partnership by agreeing to purchase at least 3 percent of its energy from renewable sources, making it, at the time, the largest purchaser of green energy in the state.
- The University wins an EPA Green Power Purchase Award and is listed by the EPA as an Energy Star Case Study for its innovations in cutting energy use in computer labs.
- The campus announces a Green Master Plan.
2004
- UW Oshkosh wins a National Wildlife Federation Campus Ecology Recognition Award for its campus audit.
2005
- UW Oshkosh wins a Green Campus Grant from Johnson Controls Inc.
- The University wins an Energy Star Award from the EPA.
2006
- Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle announces a plan for UW Oshkosh and three other UW campuses to aim to be energy independent by 2012.
- Work begins on the Campus Sustainability Plan.
2008
- UW Oshkosh adopts a policy to purchase eggs from cage-free chickens.
- The University unveils its Campus Sustainability Plan.
- The Faculty Senate approves a list of essential learning outcomes for the curriculum, including "knowledge of sustainability and its applications."
- The University offers The Winnebago Project, a two-day faculty workshop for infusing sustainability into classes.
- UW Oshkosh becomes the first Fair Trade University in the United States.
- Working with Johnson Controls, the University becomes one of the first to analyze its carbon footprint.
