Nate Heard Profile

Year: Sophomore, graduating ’10
Hometown: Milwaukee, Wis.
Major: Criminal justice
Activities: Titans cornerback
Goals: To be drafted by the NFL or CFL, to work for the FBI

Criminal justice major Nate Heard began his college career at Valparaiso University in Indiana, but when his friends from Milwaukee raved about the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, he began to second-guess his choice. After visiting the campus, seeing the outstanding athletic facilities and learning more about the excellent criminal justice program, he decided to transfer.

At UW Oshkosh, Heard got a chance to be a starter for the Titan football team. In his first season, he made his mark with four interceptions for 152 yards — including a 72-yard interception that resulted in a touchdown.

Heard’s favorite class is philosophy. “I guess I have always been a deep thinker, but my professor really makes the subject interesting,” he said. “Classes like that motivate me to apply myself so that I can be sure that I get the most out of my education.”

He hopes that the quality education he’s getting at UW Oshkosh and the confidence he’s gained on the football field will translate into his career. He’d like to work for the FBI, because he’s looking for a career that will stimulate him both mentally and physically, although he has altruistic reasons as well.

“I’ve always been interested in helping people,” he said. “That’s what really appeals to me about the FBI.”
