Fire and Emergency Response Management

All Fire and Emergency Response Management (FERM) courses provide additional learning opportunities for individuals who wish to advance their current career in firefighting or emergency response. The goals of the FERM program include to:

  • Provide a non-technical, broad-based baccalaureate level education to those who have completed an associate degree in an appropriate area of fire science.
  • Provide learning experiences that address the nine curricular/learning components of a baccalaureate education as identified by the Association for the Advancement of Colleges and Universities.
  • Integrate research-based theoretical knowledge with relevant National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standards, and incorporate practitioner knowledge and student experience-based technical knowledge.  
  • Offer various course delivery options include online courses, on-campus courses, distance education courses and hybrid courses, which make the program accessible to working adults, creating an educational atmosphere where active learning thrives.

Through addressing and achieving these goals, students who complete the FERM program can be expected to demonstrate knowledge, competencies and values in:

  • Strategic planning
  • Decision making
  • Communication and diversity issues.
FERM Mission Statement

The FERM Program’s mission is to:

  1. Assist fire and emergency response management students in acquiring management, leadership, critical thinking and communication skills that will expand their career perspective, promote lifelong learning and enrich their personal and civic life;
  2. Prepare students to manage complex public health and safety organizations and supervise employees;
  3. Prepare students to more effectively respond to public health and safety needs of the diverse communities and citizens that they serve; and
  4. Prepare students for post-graduate work in public administration or a related field.
