Julia J. Chybowski earned her Ph.D. in historical musicology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She teaches introductory-level courses in “world music,” historical surveys of Western music, and research-based music history seminars on topics that have recently included Music Technology and American Life, Musical Exoticism, and Listening to Twentieth Century Musics. Her current research, for which she has been awarded an Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Summer Fellowship, addresses race and gender in nineteenth-century transatlantic music reception. The Grove Dictionary of American Music and American Music Research Journal have published her work, and she presents regularly at the national meetings of the Society for American Music and the American Musicological Society.
