Musica Viva!
April 9, 2016

(View photos of this year's event!)

The sixth annual Musica Viva! concert was held on Saturday,
April 9, 2016 in the Arts & Communication Music Hall.

James Grine The evening's Master of Ceremonies was James Grine.  Dr. Grine is a retired member of the music faculty, who also served as chairperson during his tenure.  Widely known as a fine teacher, many of his students have been chosen to participate in master classes of internationally famous flutists. James served as Associate Conductor of the Oshkosh Symphony Orchestra, as Principal Guest Conductor of the Victoria (Texas) Bach Festival, and as conductor of the annual Oshkosh performances of Messiah. After retirement in 2003, Dr. Grine served as Board President and as Executive Director of the Oshkosh Symphony. James has remained active in the community by serving on numerous boards and commissions. He recently received the Oshkosh Chamber of Commerce Lynn Webster Leadership Award. Last year, with his wife Geraldine, he was honored with the Marvin Rabin (State) Arts Achievement Award.

Ed KarrelsThis year's featured guest was Ed Karrels, who is giving back to the Department of Music by funding the Ed Karrels Scholarship. Ed graduated from UW-Oshkosh in 1997 with a degree in computer science. Though he wasn't a music major, he took trombone lessons and played in a number of ensembles. After working in Silicon Valley for a few years, he is now back in the Midwest working on a Ph.D. in computer science at the University of Illinois, and he continues to study the trombone and play in one of the university orchestras.
