Summer Mathematics Research Opportunity: The UW-Stout REU
Date: Thursday, February 2, 2012
Time: Pizza 5:30 - 6:00
Talk 6:00 - 7:00
Refreshments to follow
Room: Swart 127Do you enjoy mathematics? Are you interested in solving problems that nobody has ever solved before? Are you possibly interested in attending graduate school or a working as an industrial mathematician? If so, then a summer mathematics research program is probably for you. The University of Wisconsin-Stout in Menomonie, Wisconsin, will host a Research Experiences for Undergraduates program in mathematics next summer. The program runs from June 9 to August 4, 2012 and pays a stipend of $4400 plus travel expenses. Students in the program will work closely with one of 4 faculty mentors on solving open problems from the mentor’s current research. There will be projects in:
• Algebraic Geometry: approximating algebraic curves
• Complex Analysis
• CR Mappings
• Invariants of hypersurfaces
• Geometric Group Theory: Thompson’s groups F, T and V .
In this talk, we will give a brief overview of the REU program and a short introduction to each
of the research topics to help you decide if you’d like to apply for the program. There will also
be plenty of time for us to answer questions and talk individually about the various aspects of an REU over pizza and refreshments.
