Heikel received her Ed.D. in educational policy and administration from
the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. She also has a Master of
Business Administration and a Master of Arts in education psychology,
both from the University of Minnesota, Duluth.
Dr. Karen Heikel came to UW Oshkosh from Montana State University Billings (MSUB), where she served as the Dean of the College of Professional Studies and Lifelong Learning since 2006. During her time at MSUB, Heikel managed dual-credit programs for high school students and programs and classes for youth, educators and seniors. She also oversaw the planning and execution of conferences and events. |
Charles Hill Director, Center for New Learning |
Charles A. Hill received a Ph.D. in Rhetoric from Carnegie Mellon University in 1992. From 1993 to 2007, he was a faculty member in the Department of English at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. In that time, he served as Director of the Writing Center, Director of the Computer Writing & Research Lab, and Coordinator of the Theme-Based Inquiry Seminar program. He also served as Chair of the English Department for three years. Since 2007, he has been Director of the Center for New Learning. Professor Hill has published articles in journals such as Computers and Composition, the Journal of Computer Documentation, and Written Communication. In 2003, he co-edited the book Defining Visual Rhetorics with Marguerite Helmers (Erlbaum, 2004). His current research interests are in visual rhetoric and the rhetoric of fiction. |

| Ruth Freiburger Director, Adult Nontraditional Student Resource Office |
Ruth A. Freiburger leads a growing program for adult nontraditional students to help maximize their access to higher education opportunities. Ruth is actively engaged in retention and recruitment efforts, credit for prior learning, the graduation project. She leads and supervises the pre-advising and pre-counseling of the ANSR team, and facilitates sensitive and quality student assistance for current and prospective students. As part of the division of Lifelong Learning and Community Engagement she is committed to learning through involvement and advocating for adult students in programmatic ways. Her career has centered on maximizing higher education opportunities for adults. Ruth has directed college programs and coordinated services at four other higher education institutions including: St. Norbert College, the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio, Incarnate Word College, and the National Teacher Training College in Lesotho, southern Africa when she was in the U.S. Peace Corps. Ruth earned her bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse, her master’s degree in Education with an emphasis in Adult Education and Evaluation from Incarnate Word College and doctoral credit in Adult Education and Administration from Texas A&M University. |
