The 2015 Fire Science Academy is open to young men and women in grades 9–12 at any level of experience and knowledge of fire and emergency response services. Academy activities include but are not limited to:
- Career planning and preparation
- Field activities, such as how to handle ladders, hoses, fire extinguishers, self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Introduction to the fire service and emergency medical service, with hands-on basic activities
- Meals and networking opportunities with fire department personnel
- Mentorship and hands-on activities provided by professional firefighters
- Opportunities for teamwork, problem-solving and leadership development
- Participation in a team challenge program
- Introduction to wildland firefighting
- Tours of local fire departments and fire-related manufacturing companies
The academy is held at UW Oshkosh with off-campus training at the Appleton Fire Department, Fox Valley Technical College Public Safety Training Center, the Oshkosh Fire Department and the Grand Chute Fire Department. Check-in is Sunday afternoon, followed by an orientation meeting, dinner and team-building activities. University food service and local fire department personnel provide all meals. Academy participants stay in supervised, double-occupancy, air-conditioned residence hall rooms on the UW Oshkosh campus. (Plan to bring your own towels and toiletries.) If you indicate your roommate choice on the registration form, we will make every effort to comply with your request. Qualified staff and trained chaperones will provide supervision for all participants.
The cost for the Fire Science Academy is $399. The academy fee includes residence hall room, recreational and social activities, daily instruction, materials, special camp events, T-shirt, chaperone supervision, academy insurance, transportation costs associated with field experiences and meals as noted.
All fees are due upon registration. Money that is awarded by scholarship will be refunded to the participant.
Twelve meals – dinner on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday; breakfast and lunch on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
All participants are housed in the UW Oshkosh Taylor Hall and are supervised by academy chaperones. Leaving the academy early or during the day is strongly discouraged. If you will be parking a vehicle in a campus lot during the week, excluding check-in and checkout, a parking permit is required.

The registration deadline for the Fire Science Academy is June 2, 2015. After this date, please call the division of Lifelong Learning and Community Engagement at (920) 424-1129 or toll-free (800) 633-1442 to determine program availability. Enrollment is limited, so early registration is advised.
Cancellations received 10 business days before the program will receive a full refund, minus a $35 processing charge. No refunds will be given for cancellations received less than 10 business days before the program. UW Oshkosh reserves the right to cancel any program due to insufficient enrollment, as well as the right to limit enrollment due to excessive demand.
