This workshop will focus on pencil and charcoal drawing. Students will sharpen their visual skills in line, shape, value, shading and texture. There will be additional studies in perspective and proportion in their drawings. We will use a variety of papers and surfaces to draw on. Students should bring an 18” x 24” sketchpad and drawing pencils. Other materials will be discussed as we need them.

In this five-session workshop you will explore many different watercolor techniques, such as masking, color mixing and using salt to make patterns. There will be a lot of experimenting to see what watercolor is all about. Students will learn the techniques of controlling the application of the amount of water and color. These techniques produce definition, highlights, shadows and sharpness. A list of supplies you need to purchase will be included in your confirmation letter.

Enameling: An Exciting Exploration

Beginner and intermediate level students—explore the techniques of enameling. Enameling is applying colorful, powdered glass to copper and fusing them together using the heat of a kiln. This ancient art form will fascinate those who like working with color, glass, reflected light and metal. Techniques include cloisonne', stencil, etching, painting enamel, sgraffito, and forming metal into 3-D shapes. Projects include pins, pendants and earrings. Lunch is on your own. Your registration fee includes supplies.

Introduction to Lapidary

This is an introductory class for students who are interested in learning the basic steps in creating beautiful cabochons (stones). You will take a rough stone of your choosing, and by using a trim saw, learn how to cut and trim basic stone shapes. Use polishing machines to create domed surfaces, and learn techniques to create highly polished, beautiful stones. Stones will be finished off using bails, or wiring wrapping techniques, which are also taught during this class. You will create unique one-of-a-kind jewelry. Your registration fee includes supplies.

Learn how most modern jewelry is made. Participants will learn how to carve wax models, prepare them for casting and centrifugal cast their models into sterling silver. You will also learn how to build prongs into your settings and learn how to set cabochon cut stones into your pieces. After the pieces are cast, you will learn how to file, sand, and polish them to a mirror bright finish. Each participant will complete at least two projects - a ring and a pendant, to keep. Students will have to pay for the amount of silver that they use, approximately $40 per ounce. Class size is limited, so early registration is encouraged.

Have fun while gaining dance floor confidence. Beginner and intermediate ballroom dance students will be instructed in the basic two-step and transitional dance patterns of the foxtrot, tango, and waltz. Advanced dance steps and routines will be added as appropriate. Each dance session will include simple warm-up steps; stretches and relaxation techniques for ease of movement; a brief history and background of the creation and development of ballroom dance; dance step instruction; and frequent review and practice. Ballroom dance is a great way to meet people and make new friends. Partners are not mandatory, but are encouraged. Wear casual and comfortable clothing and shoes. We also suggest you bring a water bottle.

Become more familiar with your SLR digital camera! In this five-session course you will learn how your camera functions with emphasis on the controls and how you can make your pictures look better by sharpening your visual skills. You will also learn how to use your computer to view pictures you have taken, use storage devices, organize files and use image-editing software. Bring your camera and camera connecting cable with you. The first class will meet from 6–9 p.m. in the Polk IDEA Lab. All remaining classes will meet from 6–8:30 in Swart 217.

Learn the science of success, as discovered by Napoleon Hill. In 1908, Napoleon Hill was persuaded by steel magnate Andrew Carnegie to spend more than 20 years studying exceedingly wealthy men in order to organize a philosophy of personal achievement. Learn from men who started with nothing other than thoughts, ideas and organized plans. This course, endorsed by the Napoleon Hill Foundation and the Napoleon Hill World Learning Center at Purdue University Calumet, is based on the secret of that philosophy. Lectures and class discussions are the primary methods of study. Learn the background of the Science of Success philosophy and an introduction to Napoleon Hill’s principles of success to use for personal and career achievement.

This lecture series focuses on rare coins of the United States, a historical overview of the hobby and profession, and the present day market environment. The instructor will provide an overview of the technical aspects of coin grading and valuing. Learn about market resources, such as coin grading and price guides, online resources, major auctions, and organizations and personalities in the hobby and business. This course will provide a collector/investor with a basic understanding of how to develop a personal rare coin collection/investment plan, including a plan for precious metals. Lectures and visual aids will be utilized in addition to class discussions.

The Office of Continuing Education and Extension in partnership with the Grand Opera House presents the Screen Scene Film Series each semester. The Screen Scene Film Series is designed to give our audiences films they can talk about and then provide the place to do just that — the Oshkosh Grand Opera House. As the credits roll, a giant screen rises, revealing an intimate cafe-setting right on the Grand Opera House's stage. Audiences remain after the movie to talk and have snacks and beverages.
Admission is $5. Hauntfest admission is $10 for the double feature. We also offer a Screen Scene Season Punch card - $35 for 12 admissions for a $25 savings! For the punch card, Hauntfest counts as 2 admissions per person.
