This talk will address the current debate in the art world between museum curators, archaeologists and Italian legislators who seek to protect that country’s art through its strict cultural heritage laws. The long history of artistic plunder has resulted in the removal of priceless artifacts from their original environments. What resulted was a century of trafficking in artwork and international controversy over who “owns” antiquities. This talk explores the heated debate that shapes current legislation in Italy and museum policy in the United States.
