Program Requirements

Earn your degree in as few as two years!

Students who have already completed a technical college degree start the UW Oshkosh program as a junior!

General Education Courses

FERM students are required to take general education courses. Many students' transfer courses cover these requirements. For specific transfer information, fill our our prospective student form to contact a pre-advisor!

FERM Core Courses

Students in the FERM program are required to take 12 classes of core courses. these courses are the meat of the program. Topics presented include:

  • Leadership and management
  • Personnel management and human resources
  • Occupational safety and health in emergency medical services
  • Emergency planning and administration
  • Budgeting and management in the public sector  

FERM Elective Courses

Students are also required to select one course from a list of possible electives. Elective topics are focused on specific leadership and management needs of the fire and emergency response industry.

Transferring of Credits

If you already have an Associate of Applied Science degree in Fire Medic,  Fire Protection Engineering, Fire Protection Technician, Fire Science Technician, Paramedic Technician, Emergency Management or Wildland Firefighting, many of your previous courses may satisfy the FERM program requirements. Transfer of general education course work from similar Associate of Applied Science degree programs is also considered. A 2.5 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) is required for admission by University of Wisconsin Oshkosh for all transfer students.
