Industry Classification System

 

Standards used to classify business establishments for the purpose of collecting, analyzing, and publishing data. Knowing your business's classification code 

can make it much easier to locate industry information. Many of the electronic resources below will also display the NAICS or SIC codes along with other information

for your chosen company.

Resources for Industry 

 

Industry Statistics Portal - "Provides easy access to all Census Bureau programs that release statistics for a user-selected industry, as classified by the North American Industry Classification System.  The Industry Statistics Portal provides direct links to the relevant statistics released on American FactFinder, as well as a direct link to the Industry Snapshot for the industry." 

 

Economic Census -- All data tables. Official economic census is done every 5 years. Most recent will cover year ending Dec. 2017 Industry Performance and Financial Ratios Industry Performance and Financial Ratios can be used to compare a specific company to other companies in a given industry or to the industry as a whole.  Retail Benchmark Trends - From Retail Owners Institute. Key ratios for 55 retail/restaurant segments. Site uses 6 ratios to give a "snapshot" of the different aspects of the retail industry. 

 

Yahoo Finance Industry Center -  Yahoo! Finance’s Industry Center is devoted solely to industry data. The home page shows the day’s top-performing industries and compares their performance to the S&P 500 index. The worst-performing industries are also listed with performance data.The left side of the page lists top industries in alphabetical order. There is a link to a full list that can be sorted by sector or alphabetically. Data on individual industries includes current news and commentary, a market summary for the day and the top-performing companies as well as the largest companies by market capitalization within the industry.

 

**Select the 'My Screener' Tab at the top and then choose 'create a new screener.' You can limit your specific industry 

to specific parameters and are able to save your search with a yahoo email. 

 

Statistics of U.S. Businesses
A collection of data files created from the U.S. Census County Business Patterns, an annual series that provides sub-national economic data by industry.

 

Business Source Premier - This resources comes from Badgerlink which is funded by the State of Wisconsin. All current residents have access to this material-- provided their computer IP address is recognized as coming from an in state service provider. You can search a number of journal and periodicals and access to industry and company reports are available. 

**From the homescreen choose to Browse 'Industry Profiles.' On the next screen, select the 'Industry' tab and search by 

keyword. 

 

Industry Trade Groups and Associations

 

Trade associations often collect information about their given sector of business. Although, the degree to which they freely share this information online is variable. You can find industry trade groups and associations through a basic internet search. 

 

Online Director of Associations - "The Directory of Associations has been delivering Association information since 2008. Colin Brown created the system that allows anyone to do research free on on over 36,000 associations worldwide."

Newspaper Source Plus - This resource also comes from Badgerlink which is funded by the State of Wisconsin. Newspaper Source Plus includes more than 860 full-text newspapers, providing more than 35 million full-text articles. In addition, the database features more than 857,000 television and radio news transcripts.
