1. Beginning Your Research

Background Information (May not be peer-reviewed)

 

Before you begin your in-depth, peer-reviewed research, you may want to get some background reference information about your topic.  Gaining this information will be helpful to you when you choose your search terms.

Opposing Viewpoints in Context

The premier online resource covering all sides of contemporary social issues.

 

CQ Researcher

CQ Researcher explores important issues ranging from social and teen issues to environment, health, education and science and technology.

  

Points of View Reference Center

A full-text database designed to provide students with a series of essays that present multiple sides of a current issue.

 

ProCon.Org

ProCon.org is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit nonpartisan public charity that provides well-sourced pro, con, and related research on more than 50 controversial issues, from gun control and death penalty to illegal immigration and alternative energy.

Science Reference Center

Provides access to a multitude of full text science-oriented content including science encyclopedias, reference books, and periodicals.

 
2. Multi-disciplinary Databases (Peer-Reviewed Research)

 After you gain a background understanding of your topic, now you will want to begin carefully selecting your search terms and doing in-depth peer-reviewed research.  Before you tackle subject specific databases, it may be helpful to check a database that covers multiple subject areas.  Make sure that you are choosing to apply the 'Peer-Reviewed' filter (may also be called Scholarly or Academic Journals).

 

Academic Search Complete

Academic Search Complete contains full text, indexing and abstracts, monographs and reports from more than 13,000 publications.

 
3. STEM Databases (All Sciences) (Peer-Reviewed Research)

Once you have narrowed your topic and done some preliminary research, you should begin searching STEM specific databases.  Once again, make sure that you are choosing to apply the 'Peer-Reviewed' filter (may also be called Scholarly or Academic Journals).

 

Web of Science

Search for references and cited references in the Social Sciences Citation Index, Science Citation Index and Arts & Humanities Citation Index.

 

 

ScienceDirect

A large collection of science, technology, and medicine full-text and bibliographic information.

 

 
4. Subject-Specific STEM Databases (Peer-Reviewed Research)

The articles in the following subject-specific databases can be highly technical:  Again, filter for peer-reviewed research.

 

  • Biology:

BioOne

BioOne is a unique aggregation of the full-texts of high-impact bioscience research journals, published by small societies and non-commercial publishers.

 

  • Geology:

GeoRef

GeoRef contains over 2.8 million bibliographic records from 3,500 journals that cover the geoscience literature of the world.

 

  • Pharmacology: 

Toxline

A bibliographic database with citations from journals covering the biochemical, pharmacological, physiological, and toxicological effects of drugs and other chemicals.

 

  • Health/Medical

CINAHL

CINAHL Plus with Full Text is a robust collection of full text for nursing & allied health journals, providing full text for more than 770 journals.

 

Medline

Medline with Full Text offers indexing for over 4,800 biomedical journals, with full text for over 1,500 journals.

 

  • Chemistry

American Chemical Society (ACS) Journals

The ACS publishes more than 40 peer-reviewed journals across a broad spectrum of scientific disciplines including chemistry, physics, and biology.

 

 

  • Physics

Institute of Physics Journals

Full text access to over 30 journals published by the Institute of Physics.

 

 

  • Psychology

PsycINFO

Provides citations and summaries of journal articles, book chapters, books, and technical reports in the field of psychology and related disciplines.

 

  • Sociology

SocINDEX

Contains over 2 million records from 1,200 core journals including full text from 700 journals.

Here are some resources for your Frankenstein assignment.

 

MLA International Bibliography

Produced by the Modern Language Association, the MLA International Bibliography provides access to scholarly research in over 3,000 journals and series, including records pertaining to literature, language, linguistics, and folklore.

 

Gale Literature Criticism Online

Full text access to Gale's Literature Criticism resources.

 

Literary Reference Center

Literary Reference Center contains full text for more than 100,000 resources including full text articles, biographies, plot summaries, and book reviews.

 

 

 

The three databases above generally give criticism for literary works.  For articles that specifically reference the science aspect, try adding keywords about science to your search.

 

JSTOR

JSTOR is a digital library of academic journals, books, and primary sources.

 

May provide some broader articles about Frankenstein, not necessarily literary criticism.  May include historical context.

 

Humanities International Complete

Provides full text to hundreds of journals, books and other published sources from around the world including full text for more than 1,200 journals.

 

Historical Abstracts

Provides indexing of more than 2,300 academic historical journals in over 40 languages back to 1955. Historical Abstracts covers the history of the world (excluding the United States in Canada).

 

 

These two databases will give articles that discuss the historical context of Frankenstein.
