Learning More About Open Access
Listed below are some additional resources of interest which may be useful for learning more about open access, and staying current on open access news and events:
- SPARC (Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition)
An international organization of academic and research libraries (and to which Polk Library belongs), SPARC works to "correct imbalances in the scholarly publishing system...by stimulating change through education and advocacy."
Peter Suber, Research Professor of Philosophy at Earlham College, an expert/proponent of the open access movement, has put together an excellent site which provides an overview of open access and links to further reading.
- Open Access Tracking Project (OATP)
The OATP attempts to monitor and update the public about new developments in open access, whether those developments are in the area of legislation, policies, institutional developments, or otherwise.
This is an excellent resource for any information related to open access. The site includes definitions, news, a breakdown of why open access is important to various constituents, and more.
The Right to Research's website states that "The Right to Research Coalition was founded by students in the summer of 2009 to promote an open scholarly publishing system based on the belief that no student should be denied access to the articles they need because their institution cannot afford the often high cost of access. Since its launch, the Coalition has grown to represent nearly 7 million students internationally and counts among its members the largest student organizations in both the United States and Canada. While the Coalition currently has a strong base in North America, it is by no means solely a North American organization and is expanding to incorporate student organizations from around the world."
