Government Websites Offline Due to Shutdown

Due to the current government shutdown, many federal government web sites and services are offline.  As Polk Library is learning, this includes many sites we rely on to provide up-to-date government publications and information.  This includes census and statistical information, Department of Education databases,  USGS maps and the digitized content of the Library of Congress.  Legislative information sites thomas.gov and beta.congress.gov will remain available, however.

The decision to close the sites was often made because non-essential personnel were required to maintain them.  It is an unprecedented phenomenon. The last time the government shut down was in 1995, a time when agencies were far less reliant  on the internet for distributing its information.

Here is a list of offline sites as of October 2:

USGS.gov
Bureau of Economic Analysis (bea.gov)
Business.gov
Census.gov
Copyright.gov
Data.gov
Disability.gov
ERIC (eric.ed.gov)
FCC.gov
FTC.gov
FTC.gov
Library of Congress (loc.gov)
NASA.gov
National Park Service (nps.gov)
NIMH.gov
NIST.gov
NOAA.gov is offline but you can still get to weather.gov
NSF.gov
Nutrition.gov
USDA (usda.gov)
ERIC articles can be accessed though EBSCO at this web site:
For the next two weeks, census information can be accessed through the "Social Explorer" tool.  It's publisher has given  free access  to non-subscribers.  Passwords are required, however.  If you need access to census information contact  Government Information Librarian, Michael Watkins at watkins@uwosh.edu
