Diane Urch Retires

John Berens

Diane Urch, Assistant Director of Technical Services and Library Systems, Polk Library, will retire effective June 30, 2000. All of Diane's colleagues in Polk Library wish her a very happy retirement.

Diane completed her Master's degree in library science from the University of Denver in 1970. Before coming to Polk Library she served as the Head of Circulation and Head of Acquisitions at Emporia State University (1970-1979) and the Head of Acquisitions at the University of Texas-El Paso (1979-1984). She joined Polk Library as Assistant Director in 1984.

During her sixteen-year tenure as Assistant Director, Diane provided leadership for the implementation of three automated library systems: LS/2000 (1986), KeyNOTIS (1994), and Endeavor (1999-2000). She also managed the Library's acquisitions budgets for books, periodicals, audiovisual materials, and electronic resources. Besides library automation and acquisitions, Diane managed the Library's cataloging and preservation activities and served as the Library's Liaison to many departments and colleges.

As Polk Library's Library Automation Manager (LAM), Diane worked with her counterparts at the other UW institutions, coordinating the implementation of the successive library automated systems and introducing new distributed, Web-based services for internal library processing and user access. She served on many UW System committees and task forces.

In addition, Diane served on the University's CQI Council, the Academic Computing Users Group, and the University Scholars Committee and also served as Acting Manager for the Administrative Computing unit. She was active in professional organizations such as the Wisconsin Association of Academic Librarians and the Fox Valley Library Council. Diane has also been active in community service, including holding the presidencies of the Oshkosh branch of the American Association of University Women and the Menasha Club.

The staff of Polk Library extend their deep appreciation to Diane Urch for her many contributions to Polk Library, the University, and UW System, and wish her all the best in her retirement. On Thursday, June 1, there will be a retirement reception held for Diane at the Pollock Alumni House from 2:30 p.m. through 4:30 p.m.

New Business Resource

Cynthia Huebschen

In April, Polk Library began a subscription to a new online business information resource from the Mergent Company (formerly Moody's). The new database, FIS Online, is an internet service that contains background information on over 26,000 domestic and international public companies. Information available on each company includes history, property, subsidiaries, financials, and long-term debt (with Moody's ratings). Also available are 11 years of "as-reported" financial statements, which can be exported into a spreadsheet.

A link to FIS Online is currently offered from Polk Library's home page. A link is also offered from the library's Reference page under "Business & Economics." The direct address for FIS Online is: http://www.fisonline.com

To begin a search on FIS Online, click Sign In (found under Member Services). This will take you to a basic search screen where you may enter a company's name or partial name, or ticker symbol. Advanced Search allows you to construct a detailed search, specifying criteria such as SIC code, geographic location, number of employees, assets, income, revenue, and ratios such as "return on equity" and "revenue to total assets." It is also possible to look up lists of SIC codes and geographic locations.

Once you have retrieved a list of company names, you may "build a report on these companies," perform a "custom peer group analysis," or a "standard peer group analysis." Or, you may simply click on a company name, then specify which parts of a possible report you would like to view. Options include history, subsidiaries, officers, "highlights," long term debt, Edgar documents, news headlines, earnings estimate, quarterly income statement, annual balance sheet, income statement analysis, ratio analysis, and annual reports.

The annual reports include PDF scanned image reports, back to 1996. Live SEC filings are available, back to 1992. The database also includes a section of country profiles, which offers a country map, short history, list of government officials, major imports and exports, ethnic groups and languages, and statistics such as "electricity use per capita."

FIS Online is available on campus, with no password required. Because we have a limited number of simultaneous connections available, we ask that users please "sign out" upon finishing.
