Census Records

The 1900 US Census was the first census to include the year of immigration.

  • The all the census are searchable.
  • Census takers did make mistakes. Make sure to account for alternative spellings and middle names.
Immigration Records
  • Prior to the opening of Ellis island in 1896 and the creation of the INS in 1906 the government did not keep immigration records
  • Immigration records consist mainly of ship Manifests
    • Germans to America( Available at the Oshkosh Public Library) contains ships manifest for ships leaving German port.
Naturalization Records
  • Prior to the immigration laws enacted in the 20th century, immigrants did not have to become US Citizens.
  • Many immigrants became naturalized in order to vote.
    • In Wisconsin immigrants only had to file a declaration of intent.
      • Women became naturalized with their husbands or fathers
