The 1900 US Census
was the first census to include the year of immigration.
- The all the census
are searchable.
- Census takers did
make mistakes. Make sure to account for alternative spellings and middle
names.

- Prior to the opening
of Ellis island in 1896 and the creation of the INS in 1906 the government
did not keep immigration records
- Immigration records
consist mainly of ship Manifests
- Germans to
America( Available at the Oshkosh Public Library) contains ships
manifest for ships leaving German port.

Naturalization
Records |

- Prior to the immigration
laws enacted in the 20th century, immigrants did not have to become
US Citizens.
- Many immigrants
became naturalized in order to vote.
- In Wisconsin
immigrants only had to file a declaration of intent.
- Women became
naturalized with their husbands or fathers
