What are Primary Sources?
Primary sources include letters, diaries and other personal papers, photographs, interviews and transcripts, government and historical records, newspapers clippings and other original sources

 

What are Secondary Sources?
A document concerning a particular subject of inquiry which is derived from or based on study and analysis of original source materials

How to find Primary Sources

Archives
The majority of primary sources such as letters or diaries are housed in archive collections such as those located in the Univeristy Archives and Area Research Center located on 3rd South in Polk Library. For more information on the Archives/Area Research Center contact University Archivist Joshua Ranger.

Primary Resources in Print
Primary sources are such as diaries, government documents or collections of letters are sometimes published. To find these items do a search with your topic and one of the following terms in the Polk Catlaog or the UB Catalog

  • For Primary Sources use Sources
  • For Diaries use Diaries or Personal Narratives
  • For Letters use Correspondence

Newspaper articles form the time can also be a primary source. Use the Historical New York Times to find articles from that time period. Link from the History Resources page

Primary Sources on the Internet
Some archives make primary sources available through the internet as digital collections.
