WHAT IS THE EMC?
Mission of the EMC
The Educational Media Collection (EMC) provides services and collections
for education students, faculty, and staff of UW-Oshkosh and the community.
Friendly staff at the EMC Service Desk will answer ready reference questions,
help you locate resources, assist in researching the library's databases,
as well as guide you as you search the library's online catalog. The EMC
Service Desk is open 52 hours per week during the semester and limited
hours during interim and summer school. (Go to the EMC Service Desk Hours)
All collections in the EMC area are available to any patron whenever the
library is open.
The EMC Collection consists of instructional materials designed primarily
to serve the needs of pre-school through high school students, as well
as UW-Oshkosh preservice teachers and faculty. Included in the collection
are children's, adolescent and young adult fiction and non-fiction books,
K-12 textbooks, curriculum guides, educational software, children's magazines,
a reference collection, and audiovisual (AV) resources. The AV Collection
includes videos, kits, games and posters, and serves the needs of the
entire UW-Oshkosh campus. EMC staff have created over 30 bibliographies
which highlight current "best" titles in children's and YA literature.
All these titles can be found in the EMC.
We are happy to meet you and hope that you will learn more about us and
use our services and collections. Better yet, come and see us! We are
located on the North Side of the First Floor of the Polk Library, across
from the Polk Computer Lab.

EMC Collections
Children's, Adolescent, and Young Adult Literature
This collection supports the curriculum of the UW-Oshkosh College of
Education and Human Services as well as other colleges on the campus.
It includes picture books, easy readers, fiction and non-fiction titles
for preschool through high school students. Emphasis is placed on award
winning titles, honor and notable books in many subject areas, and exemplary
titles which support a cross-curricula approach to teaching. The EMC collection
values resources of all kinds that represent all cultural groups. The
EMC Staff regularly create bibliographies which reflect the "best" titles
in the EMC collection. You can view these online clicking on our Bibliographies
link above.
A decision to purchase all the Cooperative Children's Book Center's list
of recommended titles since 1990 from their annual publication, Choices,
has enhanced overall quality of the collection. An emphasis is placed
on titles which reflect ethnic diversity. Additionally, special efforts
are made to collect fiction and non-fiction that reflect Wisconsin's history
and heritage, as well as authors and artists with a strong connection
to Wisconsin. This collection has been weeded within the last seven years
and represents some of the highest quality of literature, both classic
and contemporary, for this audience. New titles are continually being
added.

can only be checked out by UW-Oshkosh students and staff.) Reviews of
some of our AV materials can be found in the EMC Reference Collection.
The AV Collection has as its scope all colleges and departments on campus
and services the media needs of faculty and students. This collection
has been weeded twice in the last ten years.

books including indexes to children's, adolescent and young adult literature.
Additionally, the national education standards in most subject areas,
the Phi Delta Kappa Fastback Collection, general encyclopedias, atlases,
dictionaries, and bibliographies are also available here. Standing order
publications by the American Library Association and other professional
organizations which pertain to children's, adolescent and young adult
literature are included. Indexes and reviewing sources of audiovisual
resources are also housed here. This collection was weeded in the last
five years and is continually updated.

Textbook Collection
This collection contains textbooks used in PreK through high school in
most curricular areas. The collection was extensively weeded in 1995 and
ongoing effort is made to obtain current textbooks. The collection includes
some textbooks which are currently used in Fox Valley schools. Emphasis
in the textbook collection is on materials published within the last 10
years. Textbooks are organized by the Library of Congress classification
system, and all are searchable on the online catalog. (No college textbooks
are available.)

Curriculum Guides
Current Curriculum Guides for the Oshkosh Area School District and Appleton
Area School District are available in the EMC. They are located at the
beginning of the Textbook Collection. All curriculum guides are available
for check-out.
The Kraus Curriculum Development Library (KCDL) from 1978 to the present
is available on microfiche in the EMC. This collection provides current
curriculum guides from North America in 22 major subject areas for grades
PreK-12, including Early Childhood Education, Adult Basic Education, and
ESL. They have been proactively collected from state departments of education,
local and regional school districts, professional education associations,
specially focused education projects, and other English speaking countries
in the world. The guides provide curricula/frameworks/standards documents.
They address what is taught, how it is taught, and how student learning
is evaluated. An index on CD-ROM and User's Guide are available at the
EMC Service Desk.
The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction publishes a series called
"A Guide to Curriculum Planning", which covers both the core content areas
as well as specific topics of interest. Another publication of the DPI
is a series entitled "Classroom Activities." Both of these publications
are housed in the library's Government Document Collection, 3rd floor
South. The DPI website also provides the nationally known Education Resource
List, with links to over 4500 websites covering subject areas such as
math, social studies, science, technology, and Wisconsin history.

Recommended Locations to Search for or Buy Testing
Materials
The EMC does not have a collection of sample tests that can be used to
assess skills, perceptions or other measurements. However, a collection
of testing materials is available in the CESA Media Center (CMC) located
at the North end of the lower level of the library. There are tests to
measure reading, math, spelling, and written language as well as adaptive
behavior, articulation, receptive language, and more. Some tests are also
located at the College of Education and Human Services.
Electronic access to a large testing material locator file is available
through the Educational Testing Service and ERIC. The Buros Institute
of Mental Measurements contains test reviews as well as information about
purchasing tests.
