Call Numbers

Libraries typically organize books by call numbers. They use either the Library of Congress system or the Dewey Decimal system. Here at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, we primarily use the Library of Congress system. An exception to this is found in the K-12 nonfiction section in the EMC; these books are arranged by Dewey numbers.

Where are the books about social studies typically located?

Library of Congress system:

D-DH (world history)
E (the Americas)
F (the Americas)
G-GB (geography)
GF-GN (anthropology)
GT (customs)
H-HX (social sciences)

J-JZ (political science)
K-KZ (law)
