A supernatural fantasy set in older China. A tax collector, Ling Choi Sin (Cheung), is forced to stay at the haunted Lan Ro Temple when a heavy rainstorm whips up. There he meets and mutually falls in love with a beautiful lady ghost, Lit Siu Seen (Wang), who is under the control of a vampire tree spirit who depends on Seen to bring her victims. With the help of a Taoist monk (Ma), Seen must fight to free his love from evil.

China, later Tang Dynasty, 10th Century. On the eve of the Chong Yang Festival, golden flowers fill the Imperial Palace. The Emperor returns unexpectedly with his second son, Prince Jai. For many years, the Empress and Crown Prince Wan, her stepson, have had an illicit liaison.
