Databases for Author Biographies and Criticism

Gale Literature Criticism Online

This database is nearly a "one-stop" source for literary information, including biographical information on authors, as well as criticism of the author's general writing and specific works.  The authors included here tend to be well-established writers, and may be novelists, short-story writers, dramatists, poets, or even non-fiction writers.  Entries range from short paragraphs to perhaps twenty printed pages.  Reading may be a bit awkward because some of the pages are basically scanned book pages.

Literary Reference Center

This database offers plot summaries and synopses of works of literature (from antiquity to current), author biographies and interviews, book reviews, and some critical essays from books and journals.  It also contains the full text of thousands of poems, short stories, and classic works of literature.

Databases for Scholarly Journal Articles on Authors and their works

MLA Bibliography

This database is the major source of references to literary criticism, indexing articles from scholarly journals and books in the fields of language and literature.  Most entries will be bibliographic only, lacking abstracts, and some are in non-English languages.  The "Get Full Text" button will allow you to check for full text of these articles in other databases.

Humanities International Complete

This indexes a variety of journals in the humanities, including some literary journals.  Most of the citations will have abstracts, and some will contain full text or full image of articles.  Some may be in non-English languages.  Use "Get Full Text" to check for additional full-text.

Project Muse

The product of a cooperative effort from several university presses, Project Muse contains full text articles from various journals in the humanities, including numerous literary journals.  Its search engine is very basic; you may find it more useful to first locate citations in MLA Bibliography or another source, and then use "Get Full Text" to retrieve the article from Project Muse.

Academic Search Complete (from EBSCO)

Among many other subjects, this database includes indexing and abstracting for some major literary journals.  Some articles are available in full text or full image.  This database will also link out to other sources for full-text articles, while MLA Bibliography will link to full-text articles in this database and others.
