"Find it!" is a library service that lets you link from a non-full text article in a search tool to the full text of that article, if available in a different search tool. The "Find It" service is available both off and on campus for UW Oshkosh faculty, staff and students. If the library owns the journal or book, "Find it!" also links you to info about it in the library catalog.
How do I use the "Find It" service?
When you're using library search tools, like Academic Search Complete, CINAHL, etc. look for a buttons that looks like this:
You may also see text links that say "Check for Availability" or "See More Details for Locating This Item". Different language tends to show up because the different vendors have their own ways of implementing the "Find It" service, and Polk Library has a limited ability to change this.
When you click on the button or the text links, a menu will pop up with options for how you can get the article. From the menu you can:
- Link directly to the full text of the article in another search tool. You may see many different places that offer your article. You can choose which version you want to access. There may be differences in the format of full text (html or pdf).
- Search the Polk library catalog to see if the journal or book is in our collection.
- If Polk doesn't own the book or journal, you'll be able to do an Interlibrary Loan request.
Please note that "Find It" uses multiple browser windows that pop-up. If you have Pop-Up Blocker software activated, this will interfere with the way the "Find It" service will work for you.
What should I do if there's no full text available from the "Find It" menu?
Full text is not always available electronically, either because the publisher doesn't make it available or because the library doesn't subscribe to it. Use the "Find It" menu to see if we own the book or journal in print. If we don't own it, use the Interlibrary Loan option on the "Find It" menu or on our website or to obtain the item.
I clicked on the full text link and it didn't take me to the journal homepage or the table of contents for the journal. What do I do now?
The "Find It" service tries to drop you right into the article. But sometimes the way a full text provider creates or structures their site prevents "Find It" from being able to drop you directly where you need to go. In this case, use the "Find It" menu to get as far as you can go, and then use the site's navigational links to get to the article you need. Remember that the citation information is available in the "Find It" menu window, so it's easy to remember which article you're looking for.
Why don't I always see the "Find It" button in every search tool?
- Some search tools won't display the button, but look for words like "Check for Availability" or "See More Details for Locating This Item".
- Sometimes you need to look at the "full view" of the item to see the button - it won't display in some search tools in the list of search results.
- If some search tools are inherently full text, like Project Muse or JSTOR, the Find It button will not appear because you are already looking at the full text source of the article.
Who do I report a problem with "Find It" to?
If you're just not sure how to use "Find It" and have questions about how to navigate the menu, or questions about the different search tools - use the Ask a Librarian email service.
If you're having technical problems - getting error messages, being asked to login when you don't think you should need to, etc., contact Debra Duncan: duncan@uwosh.edu
